1984 Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia 2.0L Carb from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Love my black beast

Faults:

Rear suspension was very weak needed replacing.

Alternator brushes and starter motor let go.

Head gasket blew at 226000 (recent)

General Comments:

For $450, the car was worth it.

Handles excellent with expensive sports suspension.

Interior is very appealing

Engine power is good. I have reached 178kph (digital dash). Engine has had mods, like, Exhaust, Extractors, 3 Prong spark plugs, Top Gun 9mm leads.

Car looks awesome with Bonnet scoop, front and rear spoilers and 16" Mags.

Hi.

I own the very same Ford Telstar TX5 1984 model (hatchback).

I have a hard time looking for an aftermarket performance suspension; in other words - I would like to lower my car's height.

I would appreciate if you could tell me the model & type of the said "expensive" suspension in your review.

Thank you & God Bless.

1984 Ford Telstar AR Ghia 2.0 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A high performance expense

Faults:

Head gasket blew next day I bought it.

Had to replace rear wheel bearings.

Replaced rear light socket.

Replaced front left indicator socket.

Replaced timing belt.

Boot seals are worn, water leaking in car.

Replaced engine mounts.

Replaced exhaust.

Replaced alternator.

Replaced back left sway bar.

General Comments:

Car has been pretty expensive to run, but over all it's a good little comfortable car. To have done about 60,000km in 1 year without too many problems (hah) is alright.

1984 Ford Telstar AR 2.0 Litre from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Low maintenance car

Faults:

I have owned my ford Telstar for over 1 year now and I have had to replace the wheel bearing on the front left hand side wheel. The passenger side door handle has cracked and the brake pads are also need to be repaired. The clutch and clutch cable has needed to be replaced and the gear box has a small problem which will further on need to be replaced. Other than that the car is brilliant and reliable.

General Comments:

This car can have good pick up.

1984 Ford Telstar AR 2.0 Turbocharged from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Brilliant car, can become very fast

Faults:

Nothing mechanical apart from the brake pads has had to be replaced or repaired.

Door locks aren't the best, 2 have had to be replaced, but they were the original 18yo locks.

General Comments:

My Telstar was a standard 2.0 Ghia sedan when I purchased it, since then I have put a turbo from a Mazda 626 hatchback on it. It is one of the few carburetter turbos around. I also had the head shaved and K&N filters put on and this thing is a freak!! It's so quick. But the standard Telstars are great cars, comfortable, powerful, many options, one of the best cars built in the 80's.

No I don't think it would be a freak. Even the Turbo models had a laughable 87 kW.

I believe this car is fast. Putting turbo on it puts you up to 87Kw, but gives a lot more torque. And also if the head has been shaved it gives you few more Kw. K&N Filters are the best in the world. They can manage more air then any other brand. Which means more air, more power, more Kw. So if this this telstar had around 100Kw it is pretty good for the car that weights just above 1000kg.
