1996 Geo Metro from North America

Summary:

One of the very best cars I have ever owned!

Faults:

We have changed oil every 10,000 and put new brakes on it, new tires, but no major repairs.

General Comments:

This has been a very dependable inexpensive little car, it in slightly under powered for highway driving, but a great around town car! I love this car much better than many I have owned. I will miss it when the day comes to get rid of it. It has been one of the best cars I ever owned. I like the way it looks, it is easy to park, it has never given me reason to dislike anything about it, except the power issue. For the money it has been in the top three cars I have ever owned and I can't say enough good things about it!

I agree. I have a 1995 Geo Metro 4 door with a 1.3 liter. It's the second Geo I've owned. My first one was a 3 door 1993 LSI 1.0 liter. I make enough money I could buy a nicer car, but I can't see wasting money on gas and insurance. I'm sad Chevy stopped making the Geo.

Our family has owned 3 Chevy Sprints and now a Geo Metro. These are super cars. Reliable, extremely fuel efficient and just keep going. I have to wonder why Chevy isn’t bringing these back on-line? A new exterior look and I think it would sell big. For those who can’t afford a hybrid these are much cheaper and just about as fuel efficient. Go Geo!

1996 Geo Metro LX Hatchback 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Great Eco Car, Plus Saves Gas!!

Faults:

I have a 95 metro it recently won't start, I figured it was the alternator cause I just replaced the battery. So the alternator was replaced and it ran great for awhile until I had the same problem? is the alternator defective or the computer? thanks for your help - chris.

General Comments:

Owned a metro, not many problems with my first one. manuals are better than the automatics!

1996 Geo Metro LSI 1.0 from North America

Summary:

It is a great fuel efficient car

Faults:

I have had to replace the throttle sensor 80$ (revs up on its own when you hold in the clutch with a poor one), EGR valve $90, oil pan gasket $5, and the hatchback door is frustrating to open. right front speaker is shorted.

General Comments:

I like it as far as gas mileage goes. I get around 39-43 mpg, depending on how I drive it. It is defiantly not a car for racing or accelerating fast, considering it is a 3-cylinder 1.0 liter engine. I don't really like the fact that it does accelerate slow, b/c I like speed. If you like speed, then I don't recommend this car. If you are about saving money on gas, and having a dependable car, yes it is worth your money.

1996 Geo Metro 1.3 from North America

Summary:

Piece of crap

Faults:

If I listed all the things that went wrong with this car, I could write a novel:

Water pump went as soon as I got it off the lot.

Head gasket went 500 miles later.

Had to replace radiator.

Whole emission system crashed.

Hard to find replacement parts. For instance, we needed a caliper bolt, so we went to CHEVY and inquired. They didn't have it. Didn't even know if they made it still, because everything is manufactured overseas. When they did get a hold of the bolt, they wanted something like $25 for it. Forget about going to a junk yard, because they scrap Geos pretty much right away.

Then here's the kicker. After everything got fixed finally, the engine block cracked, and nowhere, I mean NOWHERE can you find a replacement 1.3 engine without going rebuilt (priced between $1,200-1,500). The car's resale isn't worth it.

This car is an expensive P.O.S., and the gas mileage isn't all that great either. I only averaged about 32 MPG, and my new 1993 3.8 Sable wagon gets 28 MPG, so tell me, a small crappy little car with no room, or nice size wagon that's safer and has more room, and definitely more power?

General Comments:

Waste of $$ and time.

Crappy braking, and forget about pulling out on a regular road; you have to wait for everyone to go past before you can even think about it.

Small interior without power options. Only really made for one person (even the 4 door sedan like I had).

Yet another well informed reviewer that bought a vehicle with well over 100k miles from a shady dealer ship selling a neglected and abused car. There a dime a dozen around here.
