1998 GMC Jimmy SLE V6 from North America

Summary:

Nice piece of 4X4 with no ground clearance.

Faults:

The blower fan only works when it wants to.

The Power seat will move everywhere except forward and backward.

The knobs for the lumbar support broke on both sides.

General Comments:

I love this ride. I wish that I could see my blind-spots better though. Things are just starting to go bad on her. It is a very comfy ride, but you don't want to go too far with the price of gas and its 16MPG. Couldn't you get that kind of gas mileage out of a V8 today?

I take her into the mud whenever however, I have never been stuck in the mud or on the road. Some day my son will get her stuck though, I'm sure.

1998 GMC Jimmy SLS 4.3L from North America

Summary:

Turning into a lemon

Faults:

Trim is coming off both driver and passenger windows.

Rear wiper motor has passed away.

Oil lines are leaking.

Power door locks flicker uncontrollably.

Seat adjuster handle has broken off.

Engine tends to hesitate unless under a lot of acceleration.

General Comments:

Truck has adequate power and handling, but is costly to maintain. Extended warranty is recommended. Repairs should be done by independent garages as the dealer will always charge you for something.

1998 GMC Jimmy SLS 4.3 from North America

Summary:

Poor quality control

Faults:

The ignition switch failed at 35,000 miles and 50,000 miles.

The oil cooler line developed a leak and took two weeks to get back ordered parts.

We had two handles break on the seat back latches.

The second seat cover is worn out.

Windshield wiper module had to be replaced, but it still does not always work properly.

General Comments:

The truck has very good acceleration and power. Fuel mileage is fair for that size vehicle.

We had a lot of small problems on a regular basis, that should not happen at such a low mileage. Our dealer has always known what the problem was because he had already repaired the same problem on several others.

I am disappointed with the ride, my 3\4 ton 4x4 pickup rides better. Also the high center of gravity makes it unstable in emergencies and on corners.

1998 GMC Jimmy SLE 4.3 V6 gasoline from North America

Summary:

A great vehicle with marginal quality

Faults:

Trim on the rear lift gate came loose two days after delivery.

Popping noise from the front suspension two months after delivery. Dealer still unable to stop the noise.

First fuel pump went out at 38,000 miles. Second fuel pump went out at 43,000 miles.

Windshield wiper module went out at 45,000 miles. Window washer fluid line to rear glass ruptured at 38,000 miles.

Transmission went out at 60,000 miles.

General Comments:

Although I have had some mechanical problems with this vehicle, I am very pleased with my Jimmy. It is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned, it has more than enough power, and it is still good looking after 70,000 miles.

Please be aware that this vehicle is built for comfort, not for off roading.

My advice to anyone considering a Jimmy to buy an extended warranty. (My extended warranty has saved me over $2,500.)

1998 GMC Jimmy SLT from North America

Summary:

The most unreliable but comfortable item I ever purchased

Faults:

I lost my ignition module after 5 hours off the show room floor.

Replaced the air conditioner twice and the alternator three times.

Finally the windshield wipers would not quit until the ignition was turned off.

General Comments:

This vehicle handles very well and was the most comfortable truck I have ever owned.

The reliability of the Jimmy leaves very much to be desired. All of the above problems occured prior to 38000 miles. At 42000 I could take no more and traded in the truck for two Nissans. Since that day I have never had to worry about being stranded on the side of the road.

Ditto on the driving comfort. Freeway driving with the luxury ride package is as comfortable as an Escalade or Navigator without the bulk, and the driving position and visibility are excellent. The ergonomics/dash layout are outstanding - controls are easy to reach and use. Access to the rear seats is a little tight and the back rests could use more padding. Handling is what you would expect for a truck-based SUV. Unfortunately the ride and cab features don't offset the reliability issues. In 3 yrs. I've had to replace the following:

- Steering wheel - badly deteriorated cover by 20K miles (still under warranty)

- CD/Stereo - 42K miles

- Radiator - rotted at 62K miles

- Water pump - badly leaking at 62K miles

- Heater core - rotted at 68K miles (and a big job to replace - you have to completely remove the dash)

On top of this the paint/clear coat is beginning to deteriorate. All of this has occurred on a Jimmy SLT that is driven conservatively in a mild So. Cal climate, serviced at the recommended intervals, and garaged.

With the problems I've experienced, there is no way I could recommend this vehicle. You would have to purchase the extended warranty just for peace of mind and you would still have the guaranteed inconvenience of having it in the shop regularly. With this reliability record, who cares if you only have to tune-up the vehicle every 100K!
