1988 GMC Sierra SL 4x4 5.7 Liter from North America

Summary:

Unreal power and torque

Faults:

Bought the truck because the guy didn't think he needed 4x4 any more, and thought the truck was too old with only 143,000 on the odometer. I bought the truck from the guy that bought it new from Faulkner GMC, and he took super good care of it.

It's a longbed with the 350 and automatic with air. On the way home from the fella's house, the exhaust fell off, so now it's quite loud.

I run 15W40 Fleet oil in it, the motor was bored .40 over so it's built to run.

It needs front brake rotors and pads soon, and could use a set of tires. It's 4 wheel drive, and it's a true 4x4 system. My buddy thought it would be a good idea to go through the pond on his farm; he got in frame deep (also has a 1988 Chevy Shortbed). I hooked up to him in 4 low, and yanked him right out like he wasn't even stuck.

General Comments:

Not sure what these guys with imports are thinking when they come up beside me at lights?? The only thing I can't pass is a gas station.

Wish it was a 4 speed, so I could launch the truck off the line better. If I put it in 1st and shift up it does good, but it needs a 4 speed.

Very good

1988 GMC Sierra SL 5.0L V8 from North America

Faults:

Nothing major has gone wrong with my truck. The paint began to peal away, but my dealer repainted the entire truck for approx. $100.00 The remainder was covered under the origional warranty.

General Comments:

I purchased this truck new in 1988 for approx. $12,500 and it was the best purchase I've ever made. I currently have over 232,000 miles on it and just this past July had to change the clutch for the first time. I've changed the tires twice, but other than normal maintenace, I've never had any major problem with it. I drive it still on weekends for household chores.

1988 GMC Sierra KC 3500 5.7 EFI from North America

Summary:

One hell of a truck..

Faults:

The exhaust gaskets on both sides have blown.

Replaced the thermostat a couple times.

Had to put in a new hydraulic clutch line in.

All new u-joints.

Driver side inside door handle.

Driver side front leaf spring bracket on the rear end.

Replaced the stock bumpers, and had to put new pistons and rings in and rebuild the heads, but used performance parts.

General Comments:

I am a senior in high school and have my third truck, this one is the best by far. I can burn the tires in low, 1st and 2nd from a stand still, pull a stock trailer up a hill at 55 without down shifting, hook up bumper to bumper with anybody in my school and pull them around like a snow sled.

The body has started to rust out around the rear fenders and the cab corners, but the frame is still good.

I need to get a better radio, the stock one isn't very loud.

1988 GMC Sierra SLE 5.0L from North America

Summary:

You can't beat a GMC!!

Faults:

Breaks, front shocks, back springs, ball joints, U-joints, intake manifold gasket, right side exhaust manifold, fuel pump, and the transmission all had to be replaced on it. The transmission was my fault since I went about 130,000km without changing the fluid. =S.

The lifters chatter a little bit if you don't let it worm up, but I've been putting some E.O.S. (GM Product) in every third or forth oil change and that has helped a lot. Having 347,270 km on the original 305, I'm glad that's all that's wrong with the engine!

General Comments:

This truck has been the best truck I have ever owned! It has only left me stranded twice (once when the fuel pump went, and once when the transmission went). For the amount of km on it, the thing surprises me every time I drive it.

The truck is really fast, and can easily bury the speedometer. It corners better than most of the cars I've driven, and the 4X4 is great for snow storms, or out driving threw trails. The engine has never failed to start no matter how cold it is out, still has tones of power, and loves to perform.

I hope the truck lasts me another 300,000 km because it is SUCH a joy to drive!
