2014 GMC Van 4.8L V8 from North America
Summary:
Complete lack of quality control
Faults:
What hasn't gone wrong? At only 4000 miles, something new breaks on this vehicle every day. Today the horn stopped working. Yesterday the rear door liner fell off. Several days before that I noticed the entire dash assembly was coming loose. Last week the driver's side sun visor rod broke in two as I was adjusting it. And numerous little things before that. Before that part of the side and rear doors broke. And so on...
So far, nothing major mechanically has broken, but then it only has 4000 miles on it. I shudder to think what will break down by the time it reaches 100K. If it's even running by then.
General Comments:
This model was given to the members of our crew as a work van. It replaced an older, 2006 version of the same van.
The older model was quite good. Everything worked well, and nothing major broke over the years.
On the new van however, the quality just is NOT there. And it's not just mine. Everyone on the crew is complaining about their vans breaking down. One technician's van will not keep its battery charged and has to be jump started every day.
With the 6 speed automatic, acceleration is pretty good considering the van's weight. However, sometimes you push on the accelerator and absolutely nothing happens for about a second. Other times, the van accelerates as it's supposed to. This is annoying and potentially dangerous.
Whereas the suspension on the old van was very stiff and predictable, this van's suspension is way, way too soft. To the point of being dangerous. Going over a rough patch on the highway will sometimes knock the van into the next lane as it bounces up and down. It feels like it doesn't even have shock absorbers.
The interior is actually quite attractive and comfortable, a nice upgrade over the spartan interior of the previous model. The ergonomics are OK, but for some reason GM put many of the controls backwards of how most cars have them.
All in all, very poor quality control. At 4000 miles, this van has had more things break than a well built vehicle would have at 100,000 miles.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I still drive my 1988 G20 Chevy van with over 300k on it. Very reliable, and better built than the newer vans in my opinion. Everything is steel instead of plastic.
