1991 Holden Commodore Executive 3.8L from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A cruising car with punch

Faults:

Major oil leak at back of motor, rear main seal of the transmission was the cause.

Fuse cover under the steering wheel kept dropping down.

Washer jets on bonnet need unblocking, every now and then.

Automatic gear changing was rough, needed the accelerator cable stretching.

General Comments:

This car has plenty of go when you need it.

The motor idles rough and is noisy compared to a lot of Japanese V6 cars.

But the car is big inside, comfortable to drive and totally reliable.

I would definitely be look at your throttle Body being dirty.

This is a common problem on the V6 VP.

You can do the job yourself, take the throttle body off and clean in and out with petrol.

Carbon and muck develop around the throttle body valve which has a small gap for air so the car idles. the Dirt clog's this gap up and the car starts to idle crap!

Hope this helps.

Bernie.

1991 Holden Commodore Executive 3.8 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A quick car at a reasonable price

Faults:

Has got a water leak in the boot, not managed to get around to finding where this is coming from, anyone help with this?

Developed a vibration at the rear (like running over cats eyes), when travelling at 80+ KPH. This is intermittent but also takes hold when turning too. Difficult to locate due to the intermittent nature of this fault.

Heater/Air Con doesn't work well on speeds 1 + 2 (known problem with the VN Commodore).

Gets an overwhelming smell of fuel int he car sometimes when the heater/fan is on.

Nothing else yet.

General Comments:

Fuel economy has been good when not thrashed.

Plenty of room for a family.

Parts readily available for the car.

Great fun in the wet :-)

The lockup in the torque convertor (transmission) is the cat eye feeling. I work for bat automatic transmission.

I would have to agree with the bad smell when driving with the heater on.

I'm also curious; when you give your car a bit of a thrashing, does the car reak? Mine tends to smell like a rotten egg.
