1996 Honda Accord Ex 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Its been a good reliable car even with a lot of miles on it

Faults:

The Check Engine light came on at about 150k due to the ERG value.

Ever since I've had this car, the driver's side window is slow going up and sometimes gets stuck in cold weather.

The fan will need replaced soon, it stops running occasionally and then comes back on again.

The Hot/Cold knob on the dash-board is a little tight and uneven when I turn it. Its been like that since I bought it.

General Comments:

The car had a lot of miles on it when I bought it. At the time I didn't drive that much; now I drive 100+ miles a day. So far, the car has been great! I have had very minimal repair work along with the daily maintenance. Of course, it is getting older and has a lot of miles on it so it's expected that I have some extra repair and maintenance that needs to be done. Its been very reliable (knock on wood) and it has good performance. I still have the factory sound system in it (am/fm cassette with 6 disc CD changer) and I have to admit I'm impressed with how much Bass it can put out. I'm surprised at how many compliments I get from people about my car and they are always amazed at how many miles I have on it. My little Honda is a real trooper! I just hope it keeps running this good.

1996 Honda Accord EX from North America

Summary:

It's paid for itself

Faults:

The window stopped working at 90k. The door locks have started acting up at 100K.

Otherwise, only typical wear and tear.

Honda has a 150,000 mile warranty of some of the exhaust parts, so that made one repair easy.

General Comments:

I wish Honda were more aggressive with newer creature comforts. For example, my 96 does not have remote access.

However, this car, knock on wood, at 116,000 miles is still humming like the day I bought it. Just recently I completed all the fluids flushed. And just changed the air filter; yes, that was dumb of me, and now my gas mileage is back on track. I've had all my maintenance including every oil change done at the dealership, so I was a little disappointed they didn't remind me. Parts and service is mostly inexpensive.

The car's wear and tear is average. I had an 1988 and traded it at 100K, but this one, I hope to keep for another 100K.

1996 Honda Accord Special Edition 2.2L from North America

Summary:

Good all around

Faults:

Nothing really went bad with this car. After I got this car I replaced the 4 tires, timing belt. I kept the original water pump since the dealer told me they spotted no leaking. Generally they are routine maintainance.

General Comments:

This car is Excellent! The 2.2L engine delivers enough power for the mid-size sedan, The handle is good. Front seats are spacious, back seat space are OK. Engine is a little noisy, but I was told that's the way Honda designs their engine. The trans is not as smooth as a Toyota, I can clearly feel it change gears.

The trunk space is good, but the trunk lid is not well designed so sometimes I cannot fit in some big stuffs because of the narrow entrance.

The air conditioner is not powerful enough. Though is not a big problem for me.

I noticed that the starting time became longer when the fuel level went low maybe the fuel pump is worn.

This car has more than 126K miles now. I am still driving it to work every day. No major problem. Replaced radiator, front brake pads, exhaust pipe and muffler. It still get near 30 miles per gallon on high way.

1996 Honda Accord EX 2.2 VTEC gasoline from North America

Summary:

High maintenance, money pit

Faults:

New motor mount at 45,000 miles.

Alignment problems from day 1. After several attempts to correct, I gave up.

A/C condensation drainage hose failed and flooded passenger side carpeting. It took us months to rid the smell of mildew.

Another motor mount at 60,000 miles.

Transmission computer module developed a problem, causing transmission to shift from 1st gear into Overdrive. Second and third gears were inoperable.

I have learned to keep head lamp and brake lamp bulbs in stock.

Front wheel bearings failed at about 75,000 miles.

Power door locks are inoperable.

Exhaust B-pipe was in need of replacement at 80,000 miles after several holes had rusted through.

Anti-lock Braking System sensor failed at about 84,000 miles.

Speed Sensor failed at 90,000 miles.

Radiator developed coolant leak at 93,000 miles.

Transmission is currently taking over 30 seconds to shift out of Park and into Drive.

CV boots are in need of replacement.

Air conditioning compressor may fail pretty soon.

General Comments:

This car has not lived up to the Honda reputation. It has been a constant money pit from the very beginning.

Engine is unrefined and underpowered. When cold, the valves and lifters tick and tap very loudly. While driving, the engine emits a knock between 1500 and 2,000 rpm.

Road noise can be heard clearly throughout the cabin. The seats are supportive for long road trips, but are uncomfortable for short distances.

When the road becomes rough, so does the ride. The car is very jittery and feels unrefined. I suspect the struts may need replacing. I can add them to the mile long list.

Handling is not sporty, but rather numb. The car has a good amount of body roll during turns. My previous car was a Firebird, so I may be spoiled in that arena. Steering feels very loose, and not crisp as the Honda myth suggests.

Overall, this car has been a quite the disappointment. I expected a reliable, trouble free car that would run to 100,000 miles without much attention. It goes in to the shop nearly every month, and the repair bills usually run several hundred dollars. According to the Honda myth, these are supposed to be low maintenance vehicles. That is not the case, they are extremely expensive to keep maintained and I am convinced that the maintenance list will never end. I have had to replace the distributor, all hoses, brakes, exhaust pipes, timing belts, water pump, engine seals, cv boots, motor mounts, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings, battery, radiator, sensors, wires and I could go and on. Now my air conditioning compressor is moaning and may fail soon... all before the car has even rolled 100,000 miles. I have never had so many problems with an automobile until I bought a Honda. Reliable my foot!

Unfortunally, I agree with your report. I too have a Honda Accord and have experienced the same kind of frequent repairs. Compared to my previous vehicles, this car seems very cheaply built. It should also be noted that repair parts for a Honda generally cost about double that of an American made vehicle. Couple that with the higher than normal break downs, and you have a vehicle that is very expensive to keep on the road!
