1996 Honda Civic Coupe lsi 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A reliable weapon

Faults:

Exhaust replaced from the cat back. Other than that nothing :)

General Comments:

I can't believe the reliability of these machines. All I have done is maintained it as and when required e.g. (Oil/Filter changes every 6k) and tyres due to the motorway miles I do in her. Its one of the best cars I have owned to date.

I haven't taken it to the main dealer so I can't comment on their service.

Performance wise its not going to blow your skirt off, but once you are up in the rev range then it begins to move a little quicker. It holds the road well giving you confidence on the twisty demanding bits you encounter.

Its comfortable for my 60 mile round trip to work and is happy to start every time without fail.

P.s. I have never seen one of these on the side of the road broken down.

1996 Honda Civic LS VTEC 1.5 VTEC from Portugal

Summary:

The most reliable and economic car I've ever owned

Faults:

I replaced the brake rotors with 76.000 Km as they were warped (but the brake pads were still good for at least more 30.000 km).

Some noises on the rear suspension.

General Comments:

This car is very smooth. The manual transmission, the pedals and the steering are very soft and precise.

This engine is great. If you keep it below 3000 rpm, a green light will turn on and I get about 5 to 6 liters/100 km.

If you need more serious power from the engine, I have to rev above 4.000 rpm.

This car has a good handling, making the twisty roads a pleasure, while keeping the confort.

The building of the car is at a lower level than most of German cars, and there are some road noise inside the cabin.

I bought this car after driving the earlier model of civic of a friend of mine. That same friend still has it with 197.000 km and the engine feels like new.

I give an excellent general rating to this car, because it is comfortable, economic and most of all - reliable.

1996 Honda Civic DX 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Indestructable

Faults:

Some sort of exhaust system failure stranded me once. I've had the passenger side CV joint replaced at about 290000 miles. Rotors are presently in need of replacing, but serviceable although they eat pads every 10000 miles or so. A rock punctured the AC compressor at about 230000 miles so I roll down the windows now. A minor short in the electrical system in a hard to reach spot disabled the speedo and the automatic transmission's brain at about 250000 miles. It was simple and cheap to fix.

General Comments:

Unbelievably bulletproof. Still clean and pleasant to look at. The interior is not ratty or embarrassing. The transmission shifts sure and true with no slipping. She reaches and surpasses 80 MPH on a regular and prolonged basis with no fuss. I have noticed the gas mileage is slipping. She once got 38 mpg now she only gets 31. I'm replacing her with a 1997 accord LX wagon just to give her a rest... but I'm not selling her so don't even ask!

Wow, you put 300,000 miles on this car?? I'm thinking about buying one with higher miles, but I have a long commute and was unsure if I should take the plunge. Your review helps me feel a lot better!

Indestructible...

You can say that again. I bought a 96 Civic DX coupe with 44k miles on it in April of 2001. As of 2/18/2007 I have put 138k miles on it. Gas mileage is still wonderful and the only, the ONLY repair I ever had to do was replace the clutch master cylinder last week. We had some unusually cold weather here and the seal busted, causing air and grime to be pumped into the line until I discovered the problem. Bought the new cylinder for $80 (high mark-up, but only store that had one in stock that day), took the day off from work and fixed it my darn self. Runs just like it did, like it SHOULD!

I am however going to be trading this car soon for an Accord. I wish I didn't have to, but it is just too small for my 6ft 2in height and broad frame. I would highly recommend this car to anyone, but only if you are under 6 feet tall. Its only comfy for about an hour, then it gets cramped. Wonderful car!
