1987 Honda Prelude Si 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Will last forever

Faults:

Leaks oil.

Muffler.

It's an old car, and has had its share of repairs.

RUST.

General Comments:

This is the best first car if you are on a tight budget.

I have been running mine for 3 years, and it runs exactly the same as when I got it.

I get regular oil changes every 3 months, it goes through gas quick.

I get the best gas mileage, at least 500kms a tank!!

Great seats. I drive 2 hours a day and never get uncomfortable... and I am on the taller side.

Enough trunk space for day to day activities.

Sleek.

Nothing I drive after this will be as good all around.

1987 Honda Prelude Si 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Great first car, it handles very well and it's easy to fix any problems so far

Faults:

The car had sat for 3 years when I bought it for $300; all I had to do was put a new battery in it and used some starting fluid, and it took about 4 or 5 tries, but the engine finally turned over and started.

The fuel pump relay went out about 3 months after I got it, and then I had a distributor belt break.

When I first got it, the speedometer was off by about 11mph.

At about 183000 miles the transmission started to shift high from first to second. I had it the transmission fluid checked and it was full, and the transmission has always jumped whenever you shift from reverse to drive, or from park to reverse or drive.

General Comments:

The car is great, it has been to hell and back, especially the way that I drive it.

1987 Honda Prelude DX 1.8-litre 12-valve twin carb from North America

Summary:

Like a tank; I don't think it will ever die!!!

Faults:

The car is completely being eaten away by rust.

Brake cylinders started to leak oil on both of the back brakes, but it only cost $25 for each and I changed it myself.

Muffler broke and makes a popcorn sound.

Windshield is very badly broken.

Car has a leak in the back seats and trunk.

When I first got the car, the engine ran very badly; the timing was completely off. I took the timing belt off and moved it forward, which fixed the problem and made the car much faster.

General Comments:

This is my first car; I got it in the last year of high school for only $600. The car looks like crap because of all the rust and dents; the last owner took it to Calgary and parked it outside in a very bad hail storm, so now the car looks like a golf ball.

The engine of this car has to be the best engine Honda has made; at 340,xxxKm it still burns NO oil and runs great. The twin carb system is great at higher RPMs over 3500. The car runs very strong and also is very good on gas. It only costs $40 to fill it up, and I can go 550 Km with a full tank.

The car is not fast, but OK for its age. It only has 100 hp, but weighs only 970KG. I can beat early 90s Civics and most 90s American 4 cylinders.

The best part of the car it the handling; my car has no power steering, but even without it, it handles great. The car is very low to the ground and with the bucket seats inside, you almost feel like you're sitting on the ground.

The interior is very nice and compatible; great seats for long trips, and the power sunroof is great on summer days.

Overall it is a great car. I have had it only for 30,xxx km and have been very surprised it is still alive. I drive the car like I stole it and it has never let me down. It is a perfect first car; fast, but not so fast that you can kill yourself easily.
