2000 Hyundai Accent GLS 1.5 from Belgium

Summary:

It's my second Accent and it won't be my last

Faults:

Nothing so far (I only had it 7 months now).

General Comments:

This is the second Accent I have bought and I must say that despite the distances I drive (about 60,000 km each year) the car keeps doing well. My previous Accent I gave to my brother when it had 4 years and 220,000km.

The reason I bought this first (and second) Accent is because Hyundai is about the only brand in Belgium that sticks to its warranty even when you put a LPG-installation in the car which makes driving around much cheaper and cleaner.

2000 Hyundai Accent GLS 1.5 gasoline from India

Summary:

Great looks but a lot of quality and reliability problems

Faults:

There are a lot of minor engineering and design defects in the Hyundai Accent sold in India. I have discovered the following defects in the first 5 months after buying my Accent GLS -

1. Right side rearview mirror control stopped working within a week.

2. Left side rearview mirror control stopped working after a month.

I have talked to 2 other owners of Accent and both of them had the side rearview mirror controls stop working multiple times - this seems to be a common defect in Accent.

3. Within one week, the gear stick started wobbling while shifting from 1st to 2nd - adjusted during 1st service.

4. From day one, difficult to engage reverse gear - service manager at the factory workshop told me there is no solution to this problem except to race the engine a bit and then try engaging reverse again.

5. From day one - the horn was very troublesome -horn-pad had to be adjusted during the first service.

6. Both inside front door panels vibrate and make a very irritating sound while playing high-bass music.

7. Cover of front left speaker vibrates badly while playing loud music.

8. Front speakers are under-powered - can't handle a high-power music system.

9. Front seats are EXTREMELY uncomfortable during long drives. There is no lumbar support for the lower back. Seats seem to have been designed for small-built Korean-sized people not more than 5 feet in height.

10. Within two months of purchase, the airconditioning vent in my car started pulling in air from the outside even when fully closed. Adjusted by Hyundai.

11. Right rearview mirror replaced during the first service, stopped working again within 15-20 days.

12. Left-rear seat belt jammed permanently after being used just on one trip. Fixed by Hyundai.

13. Fourth month - right front automatic window stopped working. Entire motorized mechanism had to be replaced.

These defects speak volumes about Hyundai's attention to detail and their engineering. Korean engineering is not comparable to German (Corsa) or Japanese (Baleno) engineering after all.

I really hope that the engine, suspension, gearbox etc. don't have any such problems that start surfacing in a few months.

General Comments:

Buy the car only for the looks - it looks bigger and more expensive than other cars in the category. But watch out -- quality really stinks. There are too many minor, irritating, recurring defects to take away the fun of owning a new car and make you repent at leisure.

Was your car built in Korea, or in India?

I own a 2000 hyundai accent and as well have had many problems, but, when you say everthing rattles from lots of bass, that is your fault. All cars start to that because extreme bass ruins cars from vibration. I've been through many. I will never buy another hyundai though, I have had my sunroof leak, transmission failure, both rear bearings gone, tie rod broke, and engine chugging during cold starts all within 60,000 k.m. 2 years of owning, and my hood hinge broke and paint flaking. I bought mine in Canada and it is garbage.

2000 Hyundai Accent 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Good car, poor service

Faults:

We have owned the car less than 9 months and the gears went out, they just stopped working. We called the dealership and were told that we could have it towed in to be fixed. We were told that it could take up to 2 weeks to fix the problem, which under any other circumstance may not be that big of a problem, but this is our only vehicle!! They told us that not only would we be without a car, but they would not provide us with a loaner car or a rental! My husband is in the Navy and I work and we have no way of getting there without having to rely on other people. We are highly upset.

General Comments:

If I were to buy another Hyundai, which may be possible, I would never purchase it from the same dealership again. We were treated very rudely and are very unhappy with our service. If you are considering buying a car in Memphis, Tennessee, DO NOT go to Covington Pike Hyundai!!!

You are right about the dealer...

I could fix a tranny in about 2 days... (including time to wait for the parts...)

2000 Hyundai Accent MVI 1.5 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fun, fun, fun for your money

Faults:

Nothing wrong so far.

General Comments:

Handling much better than expected, not only solid but also comfy.

It's a quick car that has a lot more power than the rest of the Accent range.

Insurance is good as is fuel economy.

Comes with a 3 year RAC and comprehensive warranty cover (4 years £200 extra), alloys, CD, ABS, rear spoiler and so on.

I just can't stop driving the beast. Sky blue looks the biz.
