1997 Hyundai Sonata 2.0 DOHC from North America

Summary:

Don't waste your money

Faults:

This was first car I ever bought, I'm sad to say. 15 days after I bought it, the exhaust got a huge hole in it, then a few months later the tranny died, then a few months later, the tranny died again.

The funniest part about this is tons of reviews for it say at 100k miles they are no good; when I hit 100,003, the timing belt just snapped.

General Comments:

It's comfy and rides smooth, but that's all it's got going for it.

Timing belts need to be changed at 60k. Expect them to snap otherwise. Mufflers get holes in them. Normal wear item.

1997 Hyundai Sonata Base 2.0 4 cylinder from Guam

Summary:

Good Car for the average driver

Faults:

Was running great.. till I overheated it... had to have the heads resurfaced and sanded since they warped under the heat, also had to get a new radiator and water pump.

Starter went out at about 97000.

Both rear windows don't roll down. Suspected to be the window motors.

None of the passenger window switches work. The driver is the only one who can control the 2 windows that do work.

Brakes and clutch make clicking noises. Started in the late 98000 mile area.

Clutch went out at 97500.

Has a gas problem currently. Only 12 miles to the gallon..: (Spits black smoke out the exhaust at idle sometimes, and at higher rpms (3.5k +) a storm cloud forms.

Cooling fans stopped working. Although motors are still good, but does not cool off radiator.

Gauges paint started to wear. Looks like a mosaic type design now.

Auto door locks only work on rear doors.

General Comments:

Its my first car. Its decent for a 4 cylinder. I've out raced civic dx models. 1st through 3rd gear have good amounts of power, but 4th gear can't make it up hills of more than an 30 degree incline.

Handling isn't anything special. Make sure you run on good tires. I was only going 50 around a medium curve and started to slide outwards.

Ride quality is good. Absorbs bumps pretty well. You feel them, but you don't bust your ass over them. Very roomy interior. Trunk space is very adequate.

Overall looks of the car isn't all that bad, although it looks like a variation of the honda accord of the same year.

Overall its not a bad car at all. Even with all the abuse I put it through and the overheating, it still ran well. I just need to fix the AC and get a damn cd player in it. If you aren't looking for anything too flashy with decent ride quality and aren't concerned about power, then it's a good car for you. If you're looking for luxury or power, stay away.

1997 Hyundai Sonata GLS 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

Good car, look for lower mileage if buying one

Faults:

Rear brake calipers replaced at 110K.

Drivers door power window switch broke.

Drivers door handle spring broke, couldn't open door from inside or outside. Very frustrating to replace spring.

Replaced battery at 95K.

Alternator replaced at 180K.

Upper Rad hose replaced at 185K.

Cd player useless, hardly plays anything at all.

General Comments:

Despite many little annoying problems, (Cd player and door switches and locking) I was generally happy with the overall mechanical reliability.

Keep up on the scheduled maintenance and this car should last a long time!

1997 Hyundai Sonata CD 2.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Couldn't recommend a better value luxury car with such great reliability

Faults:

Water pump went at at 56000 miles. that's it!

General Comments:

The most comfortable car we have ever driven. Engine is power-full and silent both in town and on the motorway. Having bought our Sonata used we only lost £200 in depreciation during the year in which we owned it. Sonata was cheaper and 'much' more reliable than our noisy Astra Automatic. Air Con. is fantastic even in the hottest of summers. New baby forced us to get an estate car. So we passed on the Sonata to Friends who are delighted with it.
