2003 Hyundai Terracan JX290 2.9 CRDI from Costa Rica

Summary:

Perfect for me in Costa Rica

Faults:

All of the 3 fuse/relay boxes are labeled in Korean, & the owner's manual is like buying a Ferrari. Yet I figure things out, do not see a mechanic except for service, and have never owned a more perfect car. I hope to drive this car for the rest of my life.

General Comments:

The electronics are overly-complicated, and I made REAL leather seats -- which I love.

I get 14 km/liter & use 4WD almost daily. This car has saved my butt many times, handles like a sports car and hauls anything. Rides like a truck -- which it is.

After 10 years, everything works! Can't say that about many cars.

It is tough on batteries, and I connect a charger at night, plus I use a battery with double the recommended capacity.

I am in Costa Rica and need an alternator belt for a 2004 Hyundai Terracan. The one I had was shredded and I'm unable to find the number on the belt I need... Help.

Thanks, Sue Johnson.

I thought I had written this. Live in CR, have a 2003 Terracan, & always felt as you do. However now the car in in the shop for a second time after failing emissions tests & paying a $3000 repair bill. Looks like the injectors were ruined by bad fuel.

2001 Hyundai Terracan 2.5 TDI turbo diesel from Brunei

Summary:

Capable 4x4

Faults:

Turbo housing cracked - turbo overhauled and housing replaced with beefier spec (known problem).

Injectors worn - replaced.

Injector pump weak - replaced.

Modified EGR system.

General Comments:

My first diesel 4x4, quite happy with it for a 10 year old truck. Drives very tight with 350k kms on it, but had been regularly serviced by the previous owner.

Interior on this spec is a dark fabric; would be better in a lighter colour, but very comfortable. Personally don't want the 2 rear kiddie seats as they take up too much space, even folded up, but they are a pain to remove.

Vehicle is a little under powered, which is probably why they introduced the 2.9 TDI, but for daily drives it has enough go for me.

Only been 4x4 a few times, and no issues; transmission engaged and disengaged OK, and I got mine out of the goo.

2004 Hyundai Terracan Turbo Diesel 2.9 turbo diesel from South Korea

Summary:

It is recommended, but unfortunately they don't make it any more

Faults:

Interior center console cover lock is broken. The cover dangles there, but fortunately it opens and closes vertically, so it is not so noticeable.

Alternator gone out and killed the battery at about 100,000 km.. which is kind of expected.

General Comments:

It is a very reliable and economical car.

No major defect of any kind. Just put the diesel fuel in, it will go.

With only highway driving, I can get closely to 950 km (590 mile) with full tank 75L + 80L more to fill to the brim. Amazing mileage. At first, I thought I was driving a hybrid SUV.. not diesel SUV..

Handling is a bit not too responsive. It feels like I had to turn the steering wheel more to get the same turning angles. It gets very tiring steering when you are trying to park the car in a small space. Especially with its age, the power steering is getting weaker and thus it requires more physical power to manipulate the vehicle.

Suspension is terrible. It really feels like you are driving a farm truck. Riding comfort, especially when you are not on a paved road, is very very low.

Ask yourself why they don't make them anymore - they were rubbish to start with, and you couldn't get a dealer to take one PX.

I think that says it all.

2002 Hyundai Terracan from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Suggestion to all Hyunda Terracan owners - please ask your garage mechanic - to check your brake hoses at each service.

Just had the experience of a hose swelling and blowing - lucky it was only in the driveway.

General Comments:

Best vehicle I have ever owned.

Pity they do not have a dual cab, as I use this vehicle - for farm work in the paddocks, chasing cattle and sheep, and also as the family car each day, driving into the city.
