1992 Jeep Cherokee from North America

Summary:

Never Gives Up!

Faults:

Heat control is broke, only very hot or very cold.

Side bumpers have fallen off several times.

Roof paint warping a little.

Glove compartment spring broke, can't open it!

Center console broken, falls off when opened.

Emergency brake broken.

General Comments:

This is a great car. I love the beautiful design. It is so classic. If you are looking for a car that is reliable this is it! My jeep has a lot of miles, but it has never once broken down on me! Other than being a little rough around the edges in comfort, it is a great light truck.

I am going to be sad to give this one up!

1992 Jeep Cherokee Larado 4.0L I6 from North America

Summary:

Reliable, powerful and a lot of fun

Faults:

My transmission went around 100,000 miles and that does not seem improbable. some will make it three times farther, but who knows.

Fuel pump went around 110,000 miles. pretty quick replacement.

There are some seals/gaskets behind the engine (can't think of their name) that seem to go. they are behind the engine so it's a lot of labor to have them replaced. the ones on my older Cherokee also went somewhere around 80k miles maybe?

General Comments:

The car has a ton of power if you are not hauling cargo or towing. it was faster than my friend's mustang when I first got it (with 55k miles).

I am 6'6" and find the pre-1997 Cherokees to be adequately roomy. I just scoured the area for a 1996 to replace the 1992 one and get the last of this body style.

The car has held up better than anything else I have ever owned. I really considered putting more money into it because it seems like it has a lot of life left in it.

The 4 wheel drive system works great. I use it way more in snow than dirt, but it has never left me stranded. I can go anywhere I want while everyone else is trapped at home.

1992 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0 Inline-6 from North America

Summary:

A reliable, quick, fun and capable 4-wheeler

Faults:

Leaky power steering hose.

Cracked exhaust manifold (happens to almost all 4.0s) Wasn't too pricey at $125 from website (the Jeep dealer quoted me $700 just for the part!)

General Comments:

An all around great car. The 4 wheel drive is awesome and it handles itself very well off-road without any modifcations. Very reliable, and I expect it will continue to be. The 4.0L I6 is more than enough power for this model, and it's a pretty quick little SUV. I've got nothing, but good things to say about it, other than it's too bad about the design flaw in the exhaust manifolds.

1992 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4X4 4.0 H.O. L6 from North America

Summary:

One of the 2 best SUVs of the early 90's

Faults:

Exhaust manifold is notorious for cracking. Although mine hasn't yet, it's pretty much a given that it will soon. Everyone's does. Mildly expensive to repair ~$500.

The AC compressor is notoriously unreliable. I've needed to replace mine twice. Mildly expensive to repair ~$600.

The radiator has been replaced twice. Mildly cheap to repair ~$300.

Although built well, the engine and transmission have a few reoccurring leaks.

The engine gets extremely hot and over time can make removal of old spark plugs, hardened wires, bolts etc. very difficult.

Brake rotors have warped.

Various interior electrical components have ceased to work.

Paint is slightly faded and a small area has begun to peel.

See my Oldsmobile Bravada review for a detailed comparison of the Cherokee and the Bravada: www.carsurvey.org/review_71352.html

The reviewer fails to mention that the Bravada is a discontinued model and brand, which reduces its desirability and used car price accordingly.

LSD = Limited Slip Differential. Wow!

I got my Jeep. Dad talked me into the best car I ever had. Love my Jeep too.

Wish I had some LSD after reading that. Both are good cars and both aren't made any more. I say the Bravada is a bit more luxury minded then the jeep.
