I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 4.0L in-line six. Just recently my transmission acts like it stays in overdrive. It will work fine if you manually shift the gears from first to drive/overdrive, but if you try to take off in drive/overdrive it will not downshift. I tried changing the fluid and filter which did not correct the problem. Also I am getting two different answers when it comes to fluid type. Some say that I should use ATF+3 but others say that the AW4/AX4 transmission was used on 4.0L 6-cyl Jeep Cherokees through the end of their production, and on the first six-cylinder 1993 Grand Cherokees (built in 1992 and 1993), but on the Grand Cherokee it was phased out midway through the 1993 model year. This transmission requires Dextron, while the 42RE / A500SE which replaced the Aisin-Warner transmission midway in the 1993 model year need ATF+4. I really have no idea which transmission I have. I love my Jeep and would like to drive it a bit while longer if I could. I am asking for any help. dclem@catt.com.

Just wondering if the Parts of a 1989 Jeep Cherokee are good for a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Sports?
My brother-in-law wants to sell me is 89... hehehe..

In regard to the humming coming from the back of the Jeep, I own a 89 too and I had the same problem. I was driving a long distance trip and the rear right wheel fell off in the middle of the road. I would check out the rear bearings and rear differential. Just a thought man. Good luck.

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 4.0 Liter Engine... it has been sitting in my yard for the majority of the time since I bought it over 2 years ago. At this point in time, I am trying to get it going... so I visited a junkyard today to (finally!) get the radiator that it needs. The junk yard dude told me that it takes the oblong, skinny, rectangular (FUNKY looking!) type radiator, but the one that originally came out of it did not look like that!!! I've visited several websites this evening requesting the information that I need, in order to purchase the RIGHT radiator for it, the FIRST time... (unfortunately, I no longer have the core---someone stole it!), but these guys have done nothing, but give me the runaround on a straight answer!!! The only thing I DID learn, is that the type the junk yard man insisted I need, came on models dating from 1991 through 1997. Can anyone who owns a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 4.0 Liter Engine, please verify the type of radiator required. I could have sworn the radiator that came out of it was bigger, thicker, and squarer (but it HAS been a long time, if I'm wrong, I just need to know... You know?!!!) Thanks!!! I have 1991 Jeep chrerokee laredo, but when the heat is on some time start a loud noise from under the dashboard which I turn the heat on & off and start to work O. K.any body knows what is the problem please let me know.

Two weeks ago I bought a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4wd from a local used car dealer with 127000 miles; great truck, very clean body, no rust, good paint, great interior, runs like new.
For the price I paid, 3800.00, I couldn't be happier, Tony Amorosia.

I have a 1989 Cherokee Laredo. Since I got the truck, it has had a loud engine rattle, both at start, and at higher RPM's. It doesn't always do it at start, and it sounds like it is upper engine. If anyone has had this symptom, please let me know what you have found. I haven't had a chance to look really into it. It runs very strong still, but tend to think it is a lifter issue, but others think it is a wrist pin issue. Let me know, other than this been a very good truck.

I own a '89 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 6 Cly, 4.0. It will not shift out of first and will rev all the way up to 5000 rpm but nothing will not happen. I have troubleshot by putting in a new trans filter and changing the fluid. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee and I am experiencing problems like it cut off while it was running, and wouldn't restart. I've checked the fuel filter and pump, I've checked the ignition coil, and I have replaced the engine control that sits on the drivers finder and it still will not run. To the person with the jeep that starts great but dies, I had the same problem with mine this summer, and it would run til it reached normal operating speed, then she'd die. Long story short, it turned out to be the CPS or crankshaft position sensor. When the go bad, they overheat and kill the engine. It's located on the bell housing and is kind of a pain to replace, but it isn't expensive.

This note is to the person that thought he had an engine noise like a wrist pen rattling. My 4.0 engine makes the same noise. I had a new cam and lifters installed at 90000 miles and the mechanic brought the noise to my attention. Well that was several years ago and I now have 249000 miles on the engine. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer Olympic Edition.. It's got 187xxx miles on it.. The paint original paint (not faded) just a little rust around the bottom..
The 4.0 engine runs good and smooth.. only thing is that when I take it on the highway I hear a humming noise coming from the back when I doing 50mph or better.. Is it the tranny or rear end? Any suggestions would be great!!

A humming sound that you mentioned is rather vague. My first suspected source would be the muffler or exhaust pipe. Then I would look at tires and maybe rotate them to see if the sound goes away. It could be more mechanical in nature, but eliminating these possibilities will help find the source. I hope this helps.

To the fellow with the 89 Jeep Cherokee that quit, and acts like it wants to start, but won't. It's probably the crank switch or the connector. On the left side of the bell housing is a crank switch that tells the distributor when to fire and feeds the tach. If the engine turns over but won't start, and the tach doesn't jiggle a little as the engine rotates, you have found your problem.
Also, trace the wire from the crank switch to the top of the engine near the firewall, and check that connector. That was my problem. Once a good connection was made, it fired right up.

I just purchased a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2 door RWD from the Auto Mechanics shop around the corner. It's in great shape. It has a little power steering leak. No other oil leaking. It only cost a grand. I love it!

Hey I got a dash board lighting problem, can't figure it out. I just installed an after market head unit, tried checking all the fuses, they're all OK. Any ideas? Other than that, everything is great with the car.
