I agree that the '93 Grand Cherokee Laredo is not perfect, but it is a far cry from being a junker.
I bought a '93 GCL with 60,000 miles on it about 3 years ago. Since then, I've taken it off road as well as on several trips, including one very long one. I also use it as my primary car for everyday commuting.
The problem with it failing to start is probably tied into the battery and power. My Jeep had a few episodes of not starting - usually in the summer time after continual use of the A/C. I finally purchased a heavy-duty battery (which all Jeeps are designed for) and I have had no problems since.
The main thing to remember is, regular maintenance. I've owned a few different models of SUVs, and the Jeeps have been among the most reliable. Yes, they are expensive to repair, but they tend to be durable. The only best built SUV I had was a Ford Bronco II. Unfortunately, the Bronco II, despite its great build, was a gutless and maintenance nightmare.
