1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2L V8 from North America

Summary:

5 star

Faults:

Wow, you all seem to have bad luck with this Jeep. I have had my Jeep since brand new, all I've done is keep up on the oil changes, brakes etc.

I have replaced some things like the dist cap, as it was corroded.

The rear gate gas shocks are shot.

I do have to replace the muffler, it has a nice size hole in it.

I did have to replace the computer chip, apparently my car was hit by lightning.

But 260000km-162000miles isn't bad, I'd like to see a Ford go that far for as cheap as my Jeep is.

General Comments:

All in all, it is a great car.

But it does like to drink the gas.

I had a 98 Explorer since new, 389,000kms, nothing major replaced, just standard stuff (brakes, oil changes, ball joints, tie rods etc.)... original motor, tranny, transfer case... ran mint until a deer hit me...

Any vehicle will last 1 million kms if you take care of them!

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 318 from North America

Summary:

Great car, no serous problems, will buy one again IF this one ever dies!

Faults:

Rear wiper motor replaced

Interior light switch replaced.

General Comments:

If you buy cars that were not taken care of, you WILL have problems.

I have had this Jeep now for about two years and I still LOVE it! It has about 225,000 miles on it and it still runs great.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Limited 5.2 V8 from Czech Republic

Summary:

Power, comfort but at a price of gas..

Faults:

Things that were bad at time of purchase:

Driver side seat heating not working (too expensive to fix)

Cruise control occasionally disengages or won't engage.

Needed new steering stabilizer at 100 000 km, some bolts and joints for front axle plus gneral maintenance...

General Comments:

Purchased car from German owner who as nearly 90 years old. Very good shape except for few glitches and some rust marks on the front bonnet. Low mileage for 12 year old car, and genuine...

Great comfort as per size and softness, though on-road handling is generally very poor. Great off-road control and decent handling.

Had the car converted to LPG (auto gas, propane...) as it is 1/2 of petrol price (which means it costs about same as Petrol in US). Engine is powerful and smooth especially in low or mid rpm, but high RPMs are hard to use thanks to auto transmission shifting wildly then.

Fuel consumption is nightmare - 15-20 litres of petrol or 16-22 litres of LPG per 100 km (some 11-15 mpg). But that is what you pay for having this size, power and comfort at relatively low price.

I love the car despite some flaws. I actually prefer it in normal daily driving (not joyriding) to my Merc SLK 230.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 I6 from North America

Summary:

It couldn't have been any better

Faults:

Nothing really...

General Comments:

Since I have had my Jeep, I feel a lot bigger on the road. I now have room for my friends, and then I also have more room in the back.

It has a nice amount of power for the 4.0, but the V8 would have been nicer.

The options for 4 wheel drive are amazing, they all work like a charm.

The ride comfort I would say is a 10 because the handling is so nice, and the softness of the shocks add the extra bounce over bumps.

I would buy from Jeep again any day.

While you might feel that the 4.0 is a bit underpowered for your Grand Cherokee, it really is an outstanding engine.

I currently own a '95 Wrangler with this engine. I've owned 2 other Wranglers equipped with the 4.0 as well (another '95 and an '03). My wife owned a '98 Cherokee equipped with the 4.0 liter in-line six as well.

They have all be superb!

My'95 currently has about 140,000 miles on it and it still runs like new. It doesn't burn or leak any oil and runs fantastic.

While the V8's available in the Grand Cherokee might've given you a bit more power - the 4.0 in-line 6 is a much more reliable engine.
