1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee tsi 5.2 mpi from North America

Summary:

Good automobile, lasts long with normal maintance

Faults:

People the most probable reason your jeep is over heating, with lose of coolant that you do not notice, is a small crack in the radiator tank which is plastic.

It's not a big job to replace and it only costs around 120 dollars at the parts store and takes about 3 hours to do.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 V 6 from North America

Summary:

This SUV has been reliable and low-maintenance

Faults:

Fuel gauge beginning to malfunction.

Rear windshield wiper occasionally fails to operate.

General Comments:

This SUV has good pickup with no hesitation, even at higher speeds.

Handled great in severe snow and ice conditions with four wheel drive.

Interior is comfortable, if cheap-looking.

Gas mileage is only OK for an SUV of this size, however, large gas tank allows for long distance trips without refilling.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee TSi 5.2L V8 from North America

Summary:

For $7K it was worth the price, but expensive in so many other ways.

Faults:

Real Differential had to be rebuilt at 95K. Dealership did not correct problem and it had to be taken back.

Idle Motor had to be replaced at 95K.

Transmission rebuilt at 115K.

Serpentine Belt replaced at 95K.

Water Pump went out at 117K.

Electrical issues - door locks, interior lights - had to be repaired/replaced at 110K.

Rear hydraulic shocks on rear hatch are worn and no longer work.

General Comments:

Although we have had many problems with this car it has been worth the $7K we spent on it initially, PLUS the $7K we have spent on it getting it repaired.

The engine is still strong and very reliable at 10 years old and 126K miles. The interior is in excellent condition and it is a comfortable ride with a lot of leg/head room.

Even though we have enjoyed the comfort and power of our Jeep we are reluctant to purchase another Chrysler vehicle.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 5.1L from North America

Faults:

I bought this car used, but dealer maintained. At 197,000 miles I took it in for a transmission repair.

The overdrive would shudder when shifting. Other than that, the repairs have been minor and expected for the miles driven. I have had very few problems with this Jeep.

General Comments:

Dependable, but not cheap to run.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 from North America

Summary:

J.ust E. mpty E.very P.ocket

Faults:

The transmission had to be rebuilt at 75,000 miles.

Governor Solenoid, all three oxygen sensors, fuel plunger at 79,000 miles.

Both front brake calipers at 83,000 (pads were still new)

All plastic resevoir's at about 100,000 miles (cheap plastic cracked under normal use)

Radiator had to be replaced at 115,000 miles (also have had 8 thermostats in it over a two year period)

Head Gasket warped and had to be re-fabricated at 150,000 miles.

Now the ABS light is on, wonder how much that is going to cost. And several smaller things have gone wrong with it, just too many things to list.

General Comments:

What can I say about this vehicle. First let me say that this particular Jeep has been very well maintained since I bought it. These problems did not arise from lack of regular maintenance. Secondly this has been the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I bought this car because of a new addition to our family. I traded an extremely reliable 92 Toyota Camry, worst mistake I ever made. Maybe it was just my Jeep, maybe the previous owner didn't take care of the vehicle, who knows. As far as comfort goes it's wonderful. It was a deciding factor in buying it. When it isn't in the shop it's great. However it's not the smoothest ride. During extreme hot/cold weather the back seat is hard to heat/air condition (maintain a comfortable temperature). Gas mileage is horrible. It's expensive to repair unless you can do it yourself. Overall I would not recommend anybody spend the money on this unless you have an urge to spend your weekends repairing it.

It's an inline six not a V6. Have not had any problems with mine except for a power steering pump that was cheap to replace. I'm very hard on it (I mean very!) and it has 150,000 miles.
