I have had all the same problems with my 97 JGCL. Rear differential whines like it's going to explode, immobiliser, all the rest. My opinion: run it till it dies then buy a Toyota. Problem solved.

Looks like you guys should have bought the 97 5.2 litre V8 Limited. My truck has 176k on it. I take it off-roading and it works out great. The only problem I've had with it is the 2 front axles broke trying to do burnouts in a 4 wheel drive car. It's a fast car and it knows how to get the job done. It eats gas like a fat man eats cake, but other than that, no complaints.

Every problem seen on here I've had in just the past few months. While overseas my wife bought this as our last truck broke it's last leg. Seemed like a good deal $4200.oo and only 110,000 miles and the benefit of a working all wheel drive! Wrong, it cost me almost as much in parts that I had to replace as the truck cost! I bought tube headers to fix cracked manifold, on second set of plugs in a year and now replacing heater core " YEAH ". But I have fixed the transfer case problem (vc) relatively cheap; switched to a 231j transfer case and I now have 2 wheel drive (12 miles per gallon sucks!! I got better in my 2000 Camaro Z28 with over 400hp). My guess is drive it till it blows up then turn it into a rock crawler. I knew I should have stuck with Chevy.

After reading comments, I wonder if I got the right SUV? Bought this 1997 Cherokee Limited with 92,000. Right off the bat it needs major repairs. Four wheel drive not working in low. Has full time 4 wheel drive. It pulls to the right. Has transmission noise, all unknown causes at this time.
Out $800.00 so far, can get 500.00 at the junk yard, maybe money ahead???

I'm in Australia and own a 1997 TSi Right Hand Drive version Grand Cherokee. Have had the cracked manifold,& replaced it with extractors (headers) and that's all, definitely no rust (near the sea!),no drivetrain issues, runs like a dream and want another one! Our R.H. drive versions also built in Graz Austria so cannot fathom how some owners have had so much trouble. Bought the car after much research, wanted a Landrover Discovery or Mitsubishi Pajero, but searches came up with lots of bad stuff, but not so the Jeeps. This is basically the first site with the majority of negative comments that I have seen.
She (Cindy) is a great car, easy to work on and do maintenance and parts cheap and plentiful. Greg.
