I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Caravan which my son drives. I just completed a repair of the infamous brake light not working with the headlights on. I tried the tin foil approach but the plastic housing had split and when the lamp was reinserted, it just pushed everything down and contact could not be made. I used a couple of hard plastic electrical connectors I had (small size GE) and snapped them into the void under the plastic ring containing the ground contact point. It was a tight fit and result was it pushed the contact point back to its original location and prevents it from being pushed back down. I'm sure other items can be used, I just had several sizes of these and they were rigid enough to do the job.

Thanks for the great info in this thread. We had the door lock chirp in the tailgate of our 2001 Grand Cherokee for months. Living where we do in Bolivia, parts are very pricey. On a trip up to the States last month, I ordered the part on ebay and a local shop (five blocks from our house) installed it while we waited -- for $6! (Yes, six dollars...)

Another annoyed 2000 JGC owner. I've had the car for 5 years and the left tail light went out at year 3. It's been to the dealership twice and they first said it was fixed, which it wasn't, then told me I had to replace BOTH tail lights at a cost of about $500. I just tried bending the contact plate, and now, the left turn indicator won't work. I can tell because it blinks quickly, which happened the last time it was broken, also related to the tail light problem. I'll give it another try tomorrow... maybe I bent it too much?
I haven't had the door lock or window problems, but the CD player broke quickly, the stereo controls behind the steering wheel broke and the AC has gone out.
This car has been a huge money pit for me. Jeep should have recalled the tail lights, at a minimum. It's obvious this is a huge problem with this car.

I also have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, where it doesn't matter whether the lights are on or off. The brake lights are killing every fuse that I put into the brake switch. What can I do?

Does anyone know where the PW, PL fusebox/circuit breaker is located on the 2000 Grand Cherokee. I have checked under the hood and under the driver's side dash, but to no avail. There is no label for PW, PL. Is it possibly labeled as something else?

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Our windows went out... there was a wire that had came apart... a brown wire... inside the door.. we put the wires back together and the windows worked for about 2 weeks...
Then the gauges started going crazy, the steering wheel keeps locking up, the door locks don't work, where the temperature is stopped working... we took the wires back apart... the gauges are working OK.. but the windows do not work at all..
I will never buy another Jeep in my life... I would never recommend it to anyone either... if anyone knows what it might be, please send an email to erica_hare@yahoo.com
Thank you.

I've got a 2001 GC. It's got 127,000 on it now.
I've replaced the tweeters because I thought my son blew them out... maybe not after reading all these posts.
Rotors were replaced in recall. I haven't had any other problems AT ALL. Not one. But a girlfiend of my wife has one just like ours, and she's had the tail light problem several times, the brakes fixed, the tranny worked on, and now her dash lights are flickering and her headlights come on at night when the car is parked outside. Go figure?

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2001. I bought it used and when I tried to use the CD Player it didn't work. So I brought a new one and the CD Player didn't work with the new unit either. I don't know what's the problem. Can anyone help me out with this? The radio and tape decks works perfect, but when I put in a CD it reads it's an error...

I have a 2000 GCL it stinks!!! Nothing but a money pit. I have replaced every door lock (aflack) the alias duck in the door sound.
My lights went on the damn thing, so I just had the whole left turn signal replaced.
NOW, I have this yellow/orange circle on the instrument panel with a key in the middle of it and a line through the circle. The manual says or tells me NOTHING. Does anyone know what this means? Has anyone had this problem?
I am on door lock number 5 being fixed Sept Rd 2009. Also had to replace the tweeters in the front. Never again. No more Jeeps for this guy. Any advice on this key symbol would be greatly appreciated.

The circle with the key is the sentry key icon.
In the past month, my 2000 GCL has stalled five times and each time it will not restart until after about five minutes. It is acting like the theft determent key function is acting up. Starts after I take the key out and reinsert it.
One of my keys was lost, very early in our ownership and the dealer had a lot of difficulty in reprogramming the replacement key. I have now switched keys and am driving with the other key, to see if the SKIM module is/was acting up. The sentry keys have a chip embedded and there is a transmitter that interfaces with the key.
Has anyone experienced this problem?

I am glad to hear I am not the only one with many issues. I have a 2000 JGC and have the same horrifying sound in my rear passenger door when I lock or try to unlock it... sounds like an animal is living in there. I also just recently had to replace the rear rotors, brake pads, axle seals and bearings, but have an almost metal on metal grinding sound now. It seems to disappear when I press the brakes. I am told the rotors have to be "broken in"... give it a few hundred miles. Any ideas?

Thanks to all for adding the great tips, especially the 5-minute tail light fix!!
I am on my 4th GC V8 - I haven't found a more comfortable yet powerful ride yet... Guess it just fits my a##.
Just a few comments from experience:
1. The brake calipers on '99-'01 were recalled/TSB'd. If you have the small ones, you should swap them out for the beefier replacements. Big difference.
2. Don't spend a ton on rotors. I've tried a bunch including drilled Stilens; the standard rotors from Pep Boys work fine. The key is to properly torque the wheel lugs!!
3. Like I said, I'm on #4 and never had a problem with squawky door locks (I probably just committed vehicular suicide by saying that). After reading the posts, it seems to me that the actuators that squawk, do so because they got dirty. Wash the car & keep the windows closed in the dirt??

Happy Jeeping.
