I would like to thank everyone for there help and comments. Fixed my brake/tail light issues on my 99 Jeep GC.

I had these light problems as well, but it was while mine was still under warranty. I agree that it should be/should have been recalled. I had two friends with the same car and theirs did it too.
Now, at 97,000 I have had to replace my transmission and my car is overheating. In addition I have the angry duck noise with the passenger side locks. Also am having some brake noise, not squeaking, more like a clicking in the front end. If anyone has had this fast clicking in the front end with braking, please let me know. I have had it 3 places and they don't know what it is.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - 105,000 miles.
Door actuator, passenger door - driver's side. Replaced 3 times. Quacking again.
Tonight, I got pulled over by local PD because the brake lights were out. After reading, confirmed when headlights are on, brake lights do not work (left and right) when brake pedal is pressed. Top/middle brake light is on. When headlights are off, brake lights work as they are supposed to.
Fortunately I knew about the brake light issue (amongst others I'm just waiting for) from reading these forums previous to tonight, so I knew where to go to once I got home for details. The cop let me off without a ticket fortunately, but I would have been at fault if someone had rear-ended me, since this was at night.
I will be taking apart my assemblies tomorrow to fix my brake lights, and trying to fix them per some of the suggestions on this board. Sadly I had already had the assemblies replaced once before. If the contacts can't be bent or fixed, I have the part number (also provided here on this board) to replace that part, instead of replacing the entire brake light assembly itself again.
At a minimum, the brake light issue should absolutely be a recall. I placed my full complaint to the ODI office at the NTHSA. You should too: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm.
I love my Jeep. All vehicles have their issues when time goes by - people need to understand that. Vehicles get old and parts break, however this is unacceptable that these are the ONLY complaints I read about my Jeep and that they have not been recalled after 10 years of use. The sheer number of complaints tells me that not enough people are complaining to the right people, and are just shelling out money to have it fixed. It took me 5 minutes to put in two complaints to ODI @ NTHSA on both the actuator issue (not totally safety related) and the brake light issue, which is a safety concern.

I own a 2000 JGC, and have had it since 2004. I am sorry to hear that so many people have had the same problem. I just recently got a computer and learned of this same web site, and yeah I am not the only one with this problem. I am currently having to replace every 6 months, and yet it is getting to be just too much to keep on driving.
I have contacted the manufacturer, and like many of you, I have gotten the same response; just too expensive to fix over and over again. My worry is having to pay for a ticket just because the manufacturer won't pick up the bill for their mistake!!
Please go to the web site and make a complaint. Hopefully with enough complaints, there will be something done with our continuing problem http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has had a few of these problems, so far I've been able to remedy them...
The warped rotors cost me $300, but I've read that the calipers are the problem because they don't seat properly, so I also replaced those, let's hope the new ones stay straight.
The driver side brake light I was able to fix with 5 minutes, a screwdriver, and a pair of pliers thanks (very much) to the posts I've found here.
Luckily my locks work even at 84k miles.
Aside from minor problems, like my battery exploding, I can't really complain much about the vehicle other than these obvious manufacturing defects. Maybe I lucked out and got an apple from the lemon tree...

This is unbelievable. Lot of the problems are identical and shared among the Jeep owners.
I'll put out a list of problems with my Laredo WJ '02:
- Rotors warping (after machining 3 times in first year, replaced them with stock Taiwanese and working fine to this day).
- Handbrake cord snapped.
- Dash speakers went out for the second time now.
- Rear brake light not working.
- Hatch brake light dim.
- Radiator cracked.
- Instrument panel flashing.
- Fuel filter and pump (car couldn't start without waiting 5 seconds prior to turning the key).
- Driver, passenger and 1 rear door window dropped and wouldn't wind back up (got quoted a ridiculous amount of money by Jeep to fix. Ended up dismantling the doors and designing an aluminium bracket to hold regulator cords instead of original plastic) .
- Passenger mirror power folding mechanism broke, mirror now loose, too expensive to fix.
- Hatch actuator making duck noise and had to be manually locked/unlocked.
- Hood struts fail after a very short time, replaced twice and can't spend any more on them.
- Temperature going up and down, smell of coolant from outside.
- Automatic gearbox slipping.
- Plastic sliding covers around the 2 gear sticks not closing properly.
- Rear bottle holder won't open or close any more.
- Sun roof retracts back when it reaches close to close position.
- Cannot operate doors and windows from driver's side when door open.
- Roof instrument console dims out every now and then.
- All seat belts don't clip in properly, have to hold the red button prior to clip insertion.
- Rear middle seat belt clip fell apart.
- Driver seat belt wouldn't release or retract, was expensive to fix.
For some reason, I still love my Jeep. Although the above things are a real pain, expensive to fix, should've been designed better or covered by Jeep free of charge.
My wife hates the car!

I haven't read all the comments so someone else may have already said this, but I figured I'd share anyways.
I thought my brake light was not working. I found out that the plugs that hold each light bulb needs to be turned a certain way in order to for the electrical connections to come together. The top bulb should be twisted upward, the middle should be pointing down and the bottom one should be pointing up.
Hope this helps.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the same problems. Angry duck sound in passenger side door and entire back brake light panel is out. Tailgate won't open some of the time, so I haven't had a chance to fix the ground wire on the brake lights to see if that will help. I can't believe they have not recalled the models for electrical repairs. It's really aggravating, because I got pulled over last night, I was lucky that I knew the cop, but she escorted me home to make sure no one rear-ended me...
