1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport 6.0L from North America

Summary:

Average

Faults:

The electrical system had problems from the day I drove the vehicle off the lot. The first thing to go was the a/c. I took it in and the dealer said the fuse shorted out. Over the next 20,000 miles I was in the dealership over twelve times for various electrical problems. The dealer kept replacing the fuses. At 24,000 miles the car started having real problems, it would not stay started. They replaced the fuel injector, the starter, and the alternator. After many attempts to fix the vehicle, the dealer said there was nothing they could do. I had to call Chrysler and talk with a lawyer before the problem was resolved. Finally the dealer had to replace the main computer board for the electrical system. Since this was done I have had minimal maintenance issues with the vehicle, until now. Now the exhaust manifold is cracked and the catalytic converter are bad.

General Comments:

I love my Jeep, I hated the headaches I had for the first 24,000 miles.

Do you have a 6.0L or an in line 6? The exhaust manifold is common. The computer controls the ignition and should have been checked as soon as you had issues with the Jeep. The loop was opening and closing at the wrong time.

"Do you have a 6.0L or an in line 6?"

Um, there is no 6.0L in a Wrangler.

In 1998 the four was a 2.5 liter and the inline six was a 4.0.

Summary:

Fun and expensive at the same time!!

Faults:

So far nothing has really gone wrong.

I am dissapointed with the soft top as it flaps a lot.

My jeep like others listed sometimes has the dash problem, but once you hit it it works like a charm.

Sometimes hard to put into reverse. Possible Synchronizer or something.

Needs a better sound system.

General Comments:

I love the thing and can't wait for winter time. I haven't found much off-road yet. This vehicle isn't for everyone and the gas mileage isn't great as I've only averaged 13. I've always wanted a Wrangler and although there are many vehicles I'd rather have, but the Jeep works for me. If you purchase from a dealer cover your ass and buy a warranty just in case.

1998 Jeep Wrangler SE 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A Jeep can push through anything!

Faults:

The gas tank often will read empty when gas is in the tank. Just the other day, it was reading empty and the gas light was on and a few minutes later, the gas hand picked up and was reading half of a tank.

The catalytic converter went out at about 60,000 miles. Was covered under a recall.

The electronic panel occasionally goes out where the speedometer and all other gages will go dead, but hitting the dash make them start working again.

I had to replace the top at 70,000. The old top and new top leaks.

General Comments:

My Jeep is the funnest vehicle I've ever owned. This is the 3rd Jeep Wrangler I've bought and will likely always own one despite the problems with it. I would encourage anyone who wants a fun and reliable car to buy a Jeep!

1998 Jeep Wrangler Sport 4.0 from North America

Summary:

A great vehicle if you know what you're doing

Faults:

Second gear wasn't working quite right out of the dealership. They tried telling me it is "normal" at first, then claimed it was a linkage adjustment (there is no linkage in a Jeep), after pointing out this fact they rebuilt the transmission fast enough. I blew out my rear differential at about 78,000 miles. I probably ought to stop between peeling out in reverse, and peeling out in first.

General Comments:

While this may not be a luxury car it is highly customizable, comfortable, and capable of doing just about anything. That "just about" does create issues when I start thinking it's indestructible, but that just gives me an excuse to upgrade. I have noticed some other reviews stating that the 4.0 is underpowered. This is true if left stock, but with the help of an upgraded air filter and the removal of the mud funnel on the air intake box power is not a problem. Overall I love my Jeep and would recommend one to anyone that wants a great all around car, and doesn't mind paying the gas bill.
