1998 Kia Sportage LS from North America

Summary:

A good car at a low price

Faults:

I have had no problems with my Sportage. I am surprised at all the negative comments from other owners. The only thing I have seen is that the fan belt makes some noise and is about due for replacement. I was told by the used car dealer where I purchased it, that it had been serviced and new brakes had been installed. With over 60,000 miles and purchase price of $7000, I think it's a very good deal. Am I just lucky?

General Comments:

I have found this sportage to be reliable and have had no repair costs in 6000 miles over the past 4 months.

1998 Kia Sportage 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

It should be a criminal offense to sell this vehicle.

Faults:

Each of 4 window motors replaced, 2 within first 3 months, 1 nonfunctional now.

Non-functional seat belts replaced at 10,000 miles, Still messed up.

Muffler and tail pipes replaced at 12,000 miles.

Catalytic converter replaced on recall at 25,000 miles.

Constant issues with check engine light throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, It's on now.

Wire harness replaced at 30,000 miles.

Front Brakes and Rotors shot 6 months after first brake job.

Rear brakes gone 2 months later.

Stitching on rear seat came apart at around 25,000 miles.

Front left wheel hub destroyed at 35,000 uncovered by warranty and costing $400 to repair.

Temperamental chugging when cold, sometimes dangerously un-drivable until it warms up fully.

General Comments:

This vehicle is atrocious and has scared me out of buying new cars at all for awhile. I'm going to go find a nice used car with a stable history and relax for awhile. There is now way it could cost me more to maintain then the Sportage has.

I've never seen a hub destroyed on a car of any age, much less a 3 year old vehicle.

The sportage is slow to accelerate and slow to get into gear.

The sheer volume of issues, including those not mentioned above, point out that this car is an annoyance to own under a full warranty and a constant financial drain outside of warranty. Find another reason for pulling your hair out and stay away from the Kia Sportage.

I have had my Kia for 4 months and I have had the starter replaced, new spark plugs and the check engine light is on. I love my little SUV, but I have been considering selling it, it scares me to go out of town in it lately its been getting hot also. I don't think I would ever buy another Kia again.

1998 Kia Sportage EX from North America

Summary:

No bargain at any price

Faults:

1. I've replaced the Oxygen Sensor at 38,000 miles (this year).

2. The muffler and tailpipe assembly were replaced at 38,000 miles.

3. Both rear springs have been replaced at 38,000 miles (even the Kia mechanic couldn't explain this one!

4. The paint on the fenders has been peeling unbelievably since the first year I owned the car. The dealer says this is not a warranty covered issue.

5. The rear spare tire release and lock assembly has been replaced at 30,000 miles.

6. There is an unexplained rattle in the rear of the car that the dealer has not been able to pinpoint in nearly four years.

7. For the first year I owned the car, the check engine light came

on without provocation. After far too many trips to the shop to count, it

was finally discovered that there was a hairline crack in the gas tank that was causing this problem.

7. Kia's Consumer Service Center is unresponsive and offers no explanation

or apology for these expensive maintenance issues.

General Comments:

My Sportage has been nothing but trouble from the day I bought it. I guess trying to save money backfires ultimately. I'm spending more money now at the shop than if I had bought a more expensive car. I'm now ready to trade the thing in (which is worth about $6,000). I will never buy another car from KIA ever!

I have had similar problems with my 96 Kia Sportage since I bought it new. Kia service and support was and always will be a joke. I don't know why people continue to purchase these junk mobiles.

I have a '99 KIA Sportage. Within my first year the paint started chipping on the part underneath the front head light, not actually the fender, but in the same area above it. I took it to the dealer and they repainted the strip of metal that was chipping, must have learned something from the '98 KIA's!
