2001 Kia Sportage LX 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Utter pile of junk

Faults:

Heater matrix leaking.

4x4 not engaging.

Rear electric windows not working.

Faulty switches in driver's door.

General Comments:

An utter disgrace for a 21st century car, my very first car, a 1972 Vauxhall Viva was built far better than this pile of junk. The interior is very similar to 1970's Datsuns.

Very uncomfortable.

Road holding in damp/wet conditions bordering on dangerous.

Rubbish brakes.

Rough engine.

Fuel economy of a Panzer tank.

More rattles & squeaks than a retired hamster.

2001 Kia Sportage LS from North America

Summary:

The check engine light burned out because it's on so often!

Faults:

My check engine light is on so often that the light burned out!

The easiest way to do this is just list all of the things I have had to replace: battery, starter, idle air control valve, calipers, brake lines, 2 axels, the entire rear end (went out and car dropped to the ground), springs, shocks, timing belt, water pump, gas tank (got a hole in it; this is a factory problem that they won't fix), fuel pump, catalytic converter, tailpipe (everything rusts out on these), muffler, and I know there are more, but I can't remember all of them right now.

This car is junk. Right now, my 4x4 isn't engaging, and I refuse to fix it. At this point, I will pay someone to get the thing out of my life.

General Comments:

Junk, junk, junk, junk, junk, junk.

2001 Kia Sportage from North America

Summary:

2001 Kia is a wonderful option

Faults:

Alarm goes off if you unlock the doors without the key in the ignition.

Check engine light comes on if the fuel gauge drops below 1/2 tank.

Check engine light comes on (temporarily) if the chassis gets wet.

General Comments:

The cupholders are much too large, they won't hold a normal soda bottle.

The car doesn't have a lot of power, but that's something I expect with a 4 cylinder.

I would love to have cruise control, but I still enjoy the car without it.

Although my Sportage is not 4x4, I can take it anywhere our 4x4 will go, by turning on "POWER" shift on the dash, and when things get rough, putting the car in park and turning on "HOLD" on the transmission. I've taken it in some sticky places and never gotten stuck.

There are some minor problems with the car, such as the check engine line on and off occasionally, and the alarm system malfunctioning, but overall I would recommend this car to anyone.

My family has owned a Sephia, Sedona, Optima, 2d 4x4 Sportage, Sorento and my Sportage. We've never had any major problems with any of them.

2001 Kia Sportage EX 2.4 liter from North America

Summary:

It's alright for the buck

Faults:

Nothing too serious until now. Just the usual stuff. But now the sub frame has broke right in half over the back right hand wheel. I think that this vehicle should be on a recall. I know of another recall through another company, the vehicle is older than mine. This is too serious to let them away with.

General Comments:

I love my Kia. It could handle better in the wind. Now with a broken frame, it doesn't handle at all.

2001 Kia Sportage EX from North America

Summary:

A generic car..

Faults:

First day I had car, the driver's side door handle came off when I tried to open it. Finding another door handle was a hassle.

The back windshield wiper has never worked.

The tire on the back hatch is crap, and rusting off.

It would make rattling noises, and would feel like it was going to break down EVERY time it goes up an incline.

Because of the above, my mom decided it was best for her to drive it on her flat surface to work, and it left her stranded in the middle of nowhere. The alternator went, and it's now sitting in the driveway because it takes so long to find any parts for it.

General Comments:

This just feels like an overall generic car.

I feel as if it takes forever to get anywhere because of it's slow takeoff.

If someone points out a nice looking Kia in a parking lot, even a newer model, I steer them away from it. I will never purchase another. Neither will anyone in my family.

A generic car.. well yes; that's basically the definition of Kia.

I'm sorry but you bought a seven year old Kia compact SUV. What were you expecting? The character of an Alfa Romeo and the quality of an Audi? The quality of Kias made from about five years ago and before was well know to be well, let's just say Korean. The reliability wasn't too good either. Underpowered is to be expected, it's a budget compact SUV. Rattles should also be expected, as I wrote, you don't buy a seven year old Kia and expect quality.

You would be silly to steer away from new models though, they get very good reviews and aren't too bad in the quality stakes. I'm not in any way a Kia fan but it does seem to me from what you've written that you expected a lot more than you should have.
