1983 Lada 2106 1.6 from Romania

Summary:

It is a good family car, pretty roomy and capable of reasonable speed

Faults:

The suspensions had to be replaced, I replaced all of them being cheap.

The engine looks dirty, I could try to clean it, but it drops oil and I would better restore the engine first.

I think the engine must be restored, because it also emits smoke, which I redirect under the car.

The steering wheel is pretty stiff, I really have to work with it when I need a fast turning of the car.

The engine temperature grows pretty fast when driving in town, with much stops and starts, although I have cleaned recently the radiator.

The clock was not working, I will buy another one, is cheap.

The main silencer had to be replaced, it was not destroyed, but some things were clinking inside it.

The dynamo failed to produce electric power when the car lights are on, maybe some diodes are broken. So I had problems exactly at the middle of the way.

Some electric circuits are not working, for example I have no lights at boot, at engine.

General Comments:

I feel very good in my car, because it is roomy and the engine sound is nice when runing at long road.

The seats are good, including the back seats.

The acceleration is pretty good, for the car age.

The speed is good, at 100 km/h it still works smooth and the car is not trembling. I didn't try it over this speed, because it is an old car. The former owner run it at 140 km/h.

The noise is low, the car has a good insulation.

The boot is roomy, I can put all my baggages for a trip.

1983 Lada 2106 1.6/4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cheap car without high build quality and does not last long

Faults:

Gearbox needed replacement at 48,754 miles.

Brakes became very weak at 45,000miles.

Radiator failed on me at 68,000 miles.

Heater broke down in 1991.

Screen wipers replaced at 69,000 miles.

Rust began to attack my car in 1991.

My head gasket blew in 1989.

New headlights at 80,000 miles.

New indicator lights at 85,000 miles.

Fuel gage stopped working in 1992.

Suspension unit failed in 1993.

Oil leaks in 1993.

General Comments:

This car is slow and I suggest it is not taken on the motorway as it struggles to go any faster than 75 mph.

The interior is fairly comfortable, but it is gloomy and the comfort is ruined by the poorly made suspension units which makes the ride jollity.

This car can be unreliable, but can be very cheap to fix if you go to scrap-yards to get parts. Also you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself.

It does not drink too much fuel helping to make up for all the shortcommings this car has.

The handling of this car is rubbish there is lot's of body roll and it is likely to tip over at high speed.

Steer clear of this brand made after 1992 as they struggle to pass smoke tests and the catalyst filter may be expensive to replace.

The purpose of the car is taken out of context.

It is slow, but it's only a small engine in relative terms pulling a very heavy (read solid) body.

Yes it has body roll, it is after all a very capable four wheel drive. To be good at it's intended purpose you need compliant suspension to give good wheel articulation over rough terrain.

Horses for courses as the saying goes.

1992 Lada 2106 1.5 from Russia

Summary:

An interesting, non practical USSR icon

Faults:

The capacitor on the ignition kept blowing, which would result in a non-running engine. I had to install a resistor in order to fix this. I suspect the regulator (a mechanical device on this car!) was bad since all the lights would dim and brighten with a steady cycle.

One day the accelerator pedal linkage broke as a result of metal fatigue. The radiator gave out.

Front suspension went bad.

General Comments:

This is really a copied Fiat from the 60's. It was chosen car of the year so the Russians decided to copy the thing and rename it.

It's an ancient car based on 1960's technology. The quality is not bad, but its ride is like a tractor. Very heavy steering and the seats just don't cut it. The driving position is very awkward.

It's an icon of the USSR. The car was built in '92, but if you sold this thing in the USA in say 1960 no one in their right mind would buy it.

Cuba is full of these things.
