1997 Land Rover Discovery 4 litre gas from North America

Faults:

The front seats were designed by Satan. They are too short in the lower area, providing no leg support. Sciatica pains abound. The cupholder was designed for European and not America (ie Snapple; Big Gulp) containers. The lighter socket is 1mm too large for most car phone plugs. Plugs fall out..

General Comments:

Great unstoppable vehicle. Will boldly go where no vehicle has gone before, at a great price. Typical 1980's British build quality and (lack of) attention to the little details. I test drove the 1999 Disco II; many errors were attended to. I do love to take this car skiing, though.

I am looking for a socket adapter for our 1996 Discovery. We've been frustrated by the same item pointed out in this review - the lighter socket (which I thought was just worn) is about 1mm too large for most American appliances; cell phones, iPod chargers, etc. Can anyone point me to a good source to rectify this problem?

Replace your socket with one bought @ a local car store or walmart for 7.99.

Are you helpless???

1997 Land Rover Discovery SE 2.5 turbo diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Faults:

Noisy A/C belt, replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

At 27,000 km the car has been great.

Wet weather and unsealed roads are no problem. On long trips or 9 hours+ it is very comfortable and induces minimal driver fatigue. City driving requires more effort than usual due to the heavy clutch, but you develop a strong left leg.

1997 Land Rover Discovery TDI 2.0 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Over 26,000 miles in 15 months, had windscreen washer pack up once, nothing else.

General Comments:

Great driving position and comfortable front passenger seat, back more comfortable for kids due leg room than adults on long trips. Mid range (say 40-70mph) acceleration slow but comfortably tops published top speed (ie can go over 90mph easily). Diesel good mpg and aircon great optional extra with separate front/back settings. Problem for old people to get in as v high and no step like some 4*4's have. Boot a bit vertical which can make taking lot of luggage tricky to pack. Great to drive on v wet or icy roads, seems v stable.

1997 Land Rover Discovery TDi 2.5 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Alternator failed - car still mobile

Popped out of high / low range

In both cases the road-side / home assistance was first class and arrived within the hour. (Mondial)

General Comments:

Unbeatable driving position and all-weather performance, marred by occasional mechanical problems.

The TDi is OK for motorway use but takes too long to accelerate, leaving you stuck behind traffic queues on A roads.

My second Discovery. Wouldn't consider anything else. The first was completely reliable and never let us down.
