For what you pay, the Freelander is probably the best looking 4X4 in this price range, but I'm sure their service is also the worse in this price range. Their sales are so arrogant and rule!.. oh by the way the cheap plaster do rattle!!!

I have had a Freelander 1.8ES Petrol (May 2001 Y Reg) for 8 months and I have been very pleased, until now! I took it to the local Land Rover dealer for them to check over a few rattles! It is under a full Land Rover Warranty until November 2004, and when I collected my vehicle I was told I required a new gear box, which was fine as the warranty covered this. However, the garage required my Freelander for a further inspection, this time by a representative from the Warranty company, as they could not authorize such an expensive job without a full inspection of their own! Later that day I received a telephone call from the garage to explain that the warranty company does not think the gear box was the problem, but a new clutch which, is at a cost of £450 to me is! So, the garage diagnosed the gear box needed replacing, costing £2000 which I would have done and paid had I not been under warranty, but now after a second opinion, it's the clutch. What do I do???

I own a Jeep Liberty privately and drive a Range Rover Vogue as a company car.
In my mind the Range Rover is the best car money can buy and I love it to bits, but I would not even consider changing my Liberty for a Freelander because the Freelander is build poorly, has a lot of technical problems, it is getting old and it is not a 4x4, it is just a soft- roader with 4 wheel drive.
I sometimes drive a friends Freelander and I really hate it, the dash- layout is designed by a drunken blind person, most buttons are fitted like an after thought and the cabin feels cramped compared with the Liberty.
If you want a poser with poor quality and a fake 4x4 claim, get a freelander, if you want the real thing get a Liberty (or even better if you can afford it a Range Rover)

I have owned a 1.8 S reg freelander for the past 3 years. It has been towed twice. Once was a cam belt failure and the extended warranty had just run out. It was very costly, but could have be so much worse if the dealer didn't offer to use second hand parts to fix the wrecked engine. I have alway had problems with the central locking, the drivers airbag was and is still faulty, the sound system failed after 8 months and its failed to start because of the damp a few times.
However, I love my Freelander. I have driven it thousands of miles around the countryside of Scotland and England and have even done some harrowing in the fields with it. It was fantastic in the bad weather. I live at the top of a hill and last winter it was a deadly skating ring. But my Freelander held the road perfectly whilst others were slip, sliding around or stranded.
I do hope Landrover get their act together and sort out all the bad bits, because I'd love to buy a brand new shiny one.

I live in the Bahamas and a few weeks ago, I bought a 2003 Land Rover Freelander SE. I was happy to receive my vehicle, as the reports on it was very positive. The Carfax report was also great on this vehicle. I've had the vehicle for 2 days now and it's already in the mechanic shop. For some weird reason, it wouldn't reverse. It goes into gear, but doesn't budge. I am begging anyone out there who probably knows what's wrong with this vehicle to please tell me as I don't have a clue. I have already contacted the dealer only to be told that I don't have a warranty on the vehicle as it is an export. I am so frustrated right now. I need my vehicle working and soon. I bought this vehicle for durability, I guess I didn't know what I was getting into. Please help me someone.

In less than 16 months my TD4 Freelander was recovered twice; front brake failure and fuel pump seizure and was returned to the dealer for: drivers window failure, power fold door mirror failure, hand-brake cable failure (twice!!). I traded it in with a sigh of relief. I have no doubt that Land Rover have a strong reputation, but my experience left me with a bad taste and won't go near them again!!
