The point here is (after owning a few Mazdas and reading multiple reviews on here and elsewhere) that Mazda from this time period rust earlier than your average car.

Cars don’t rust if you are careful. There is a protective layer between the sheet metal and whatever the car may come into contact with (including water). Unless you allow that protective layer to be eaten away, it won’t rust.

But how do you explain the fact my Ford/Toyota/BMW cars at 10 years old do not have any rust and my Mazda at only 5 years did? I have driven them all on the same roads for years from new and followed an identical and equal washing schedule for all cars?
I stand by my comments, Mazda's rust early, they must have used cheaper paint and/or have lesser rust protection.

"Mazda's rust on the showroom floor" - a quote I used to see often around the internet about cars from this time.

"Cars don’t rust if you are careful" Mazdas of certain years were rust buckets. End of discussion.

According to who? That is like saying someone who didn’t change the oil for 50k miles on a car, then the engine blows, that that is the car’s fault instead of the owner.

But in this particular case the reviewer and a commentor above did wash the car correctly and still had early rust issues.
If you don't believe anyone on here I think you should do an Internet search for Mazda rust issues, they are known for it. Mercedes in the early 2000's had problems with early rusting on some cars as well, this isn't an attack on Mazda. Unless people in the early 2000's forgot how to wash cars, I think it's fair to say some manufacturers got cheap on rust protection.

My family had the same era Mazdas and none had any rust. The oldest was 21 years old. We live in the rust belt and wash our vehicles regularly.

When the salt comes up from the road, it’s important to keep the car rinsed off. Just part of owning a car. Give it time to dry afterward, too. Don’t gamble going through shallow puddles or streams either and risking water getting on the underbody. I’ve never had a car rust by doing all these things.
