1991 Mazda B2600 i 2.6L from North America

Summary:

An inexpensive joy to drive on and off road

Faults:

There have been no major mechanical problems associated with the engine. Although the computer did malfunction, through research I found that this is a common problem with this and other vehicle models using this type of computer.

There have also been a few cosmetic details with which I am not happy. The paint has not held up well; the hood and roof have "worn" through displaying little specks of primer.

General Comments:

I work on a farm and this little pickup runs with the "big dogs."

It is also a joy to drive on back roads, it feels like a little sports car and holds the curves very well. Whether on or off road it kicks a**.

1991 Mazda B2600 Cab Plus 2.6 fuel injected from North America

Summary:

A very reliable light duty pick-up

Faults:

The fuel pump went within the first month I had the truck. It was relatively easy to replace.

There is rust everywhere on the under-body of the truck. I live in northern Canada however, and salt is used in abundance on the roads.

Exaust system needs replacing due to rust.

The ignition coil is starting to die.

This truck had been neglected by the previous owner. I needed to do lots of basic maintenance (park plugs, air filter, O2 sensor, etc.) to bring this truck back to its former glory.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable truck, considering I bought it for 2000$.

I have been slowly modifying it, as when something goes, I install the performance replacement.

I have already installed a K&N filter, Bosch 4+ spark plugs, MSD 8.5mm spark plug wires. The performance gains by installing performance parts, although few, have already added to fuel economy and horsepower.

I have a MSD 6T ignition controller and a MSD High Vibration Coil sitting on my desk ready to be installed as soon as I get a day off.

This truck has been very reliable, and I would recommend buying a one to any person who needs a light-duty truck with 4x4 and is on a limited budget.

Sounds super. Where in northern Canada? Alberta? I have 2 b2600 4x4 91-92. What would you modify first if on a budget?

1991 Mazda B2600 i CabPlus 4x4 Ute 2.6 EFI from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A good, tough, no-nonsense work and fun vehicle

Faults:

The drivers seat has a slight rip in it.

General Comments:

This is my first 4x4, and I am very impressed with its on-road ability and especially impressed with how it handles off-road.

I have been out with Chevy Landcruisers, Pajeros, and Patrols in the mud and through rivers, up and down some rough terrain and the only draw back possibly was its long wheelbase now and then.

Considering I run BF Goodrich 265/70/15 T/A's on it, I think all were most surprised how well it did.

Good gearing and 4x4 system.

1991 Mazda B2600 2.6L EFI from North America

Summary:

A tough, but rough around the edges truck

Faults:

Clutch slave cylinder needed replacing at 93000.

Started to overheat at 98000, replaced radiator.

Replaced fan clutch and water pump with radiator.

Air conditioning drier/filter plugged at 112000, I also replaced the condenser at the same time.

Front CV axle bearings started to go at 118000.

Failed emissions at 96000. Replaced the oxygen sensor. Passed emissions.

Seats are vinyl and bench type. The vinyl is flimsy and has not held up well.

General Comments:

I like that the truck is small and light weight. I have never been stuck in any snow or ice storms. I have found my way out of places where 4Runners and better drivers failed. Great gearing ratios to match the engine. It is only a 4 cylinder with 125 or horsepower, with the air conditioning on and a load in the back it's a little slow off the line. Its OK at highway speeds though. Gas mileage is acceptable of 20 or so on the highway and 17-18 in town. It takes 89 octane or higher gas or it pings badly, regardless of timing or plugs.

I don't like the seats. Mazda chose cheap seats. I am small in stature and the seats are a bit awkward and somewhat uncomfortable.

The truck is fairly noisy at most speeds, there is no sound insulation anywhere in the doors or rear of the cab.

It uses a bit of oil, 1 quart per 1250 miles. Not too bad considering the mileage. I believe it is due to blow-by on the valves and not the rings.

Overall a good truck. I've done so much to it, but am now selling it for disability reasons. My loss is going to be someone's great gain. The paint is not oxidized one bit, garaged great wheels and tires plus new KYB shocks.

About the seats being uncomfortable for someone small... they aren't any better for someone 6'3.
