1988 Mazda MX6 GT 2.2 turbo from North America

Summary:

Responsive, reliable, rocket!

Faults:

Replaced both front axles after the boots cracked (150,000 k).

Replaced alternator twice.

Rear wheel wells beginning to rust (2001). Not bad for a Japanese car that is 14 years old.

Power antenna sounds likes it's working, but doesn't actually move.

General Comments:

Very good on gas if you drive like Dr. Jekyll... not bad on gas when Mr. Hyde comes out to play.

Very quick and responsive, but watch out for the torque steer when the turbo kicks in.

I love this car... it is the best I have ever owned. At 5'9" it fits me just right, but 6 foot (plus) passengers request I open the sun roof.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT 2.2 litre turbo from North America

Summary:

An incredible car that has unbelievable potential

Faults:

The throttle body boot ripped and needed replacing at around 102000 kilometres.

Spoiler started to rust out right where it is bolted to the car on the passenger side.

Alternator went at around 104000 kilometres.

General Comments:

This car is very reliable. It is my first car, but for a 13 year old car, she is still running great!!

Although I don't find this car very economical on gas. I only get about 350 kilometres on a full tank, 400 kilometres max!!

Otherwise, this car is a powerful little piece of machinery. Only 145 horsepower, but the torque makes up for it. Do some little performance mods and the car will do wonders for you.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT 2.0 turbo from North America

Summary:

A good fun, economical performance vehicle

Faults:

Rear quarter panels have been rusting badly in last 2 years.

Hood leading edge rusted and replaced at 120000 km.

Parking brake cable seized in its sleeve twice due to road spray.

Driver's seat tilt mechanism pin sheared.

Exhaust system aft of the converter has been replaced 3 times.

General Comments:

A fun car to drive, especially with manual transmission.

Good pick-up, especially when the revs are above 3000.

The last of the real MX6's with an engine and transmission that loves to be worked.

Punch the throttle to 6000rpm in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and it takes off like a scalded rabbit.

You have to drive this car and not sit back and be a passenger. It needs to be kept pointing in the correct direction.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT turbo from North America

Summary:

Dependable, efficent car

Faults:

The clutch in the car went two days after I got it, but I got that fixed.

I never got the blinkers fixed.

I got in an accident and totalled the front end of the car.

General Comments:

Easy to drive, very comfortable. Runs good for a little car and has good pick-up.

It was my first car and I would have traded it for nothing. I wish I had the money to get it fixed.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT 2.2 turbo from North America

Summary:

A very good car, fun to drive, inexpensive to buy and own

Faults:

Nothing serious. The power antenna isn't power anymore, the fuel gauge only works when the tank is at least half full and I sometimes have to yank the gas tank cover lever twice to open. But for a thirteen year old car it's really nothing. I've changed the oil twice, but had _no_ repair costs since I got it five months ago.

General Comments:

Extremely reliable (even more reliable than my old Volvo), powerful and fun to drive yet fuel efficient, perhaps a bit small (I'm 6'2", 200 lbs) but fairly comfortable thanks to the adjustable steering wheel.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT 2.2L turbo from North America

Summary:

Fast and cheap

Faults:

The front driver side CV joint went bad at 88000.

The blow off valve or air bypass valve needed replacement at 95000.

General Comments:

This Mazda is the strongest running engine that I have ever been in for a four cylinder.

The cars handling is not the best, but some cheap mods can help a lot.

Overall I am very happy with the car.

1988 Mazda MX6 GT Turbo from North America

Faults:

Your upkeep and maintenance needed for a car with 185,000 miles on it until recently when my son overheated it when a hose broke on a trip. Even then, the block did not crack and the car runs but needs to be rebuilt.

General Comments:

The car was the best I have ever had and performance was outstanding. All of the electronics continued to work and there is no rust on the car. The price to overhaul the engine was too much at the dealer, therefore I gave it to a friend who works on cars (he loves it) and plan to buy a 1999 626.
