1991 Mazda MX6 GT turbo from North America

Summary:

I should've bought a tow truck for a second car

Faults:

Exhaust was ready for replacement when I bought it but not loud yet.

Front brake rotors warped suddenly for no apparent reason.

A/C circuitry went bad after having refrigerant recharged. Blower motor switch went out just before that.

Paint faded from red to an awful pink.

Heater never did put out more than just barely enough heat to defog the windshield in 30's temperatures, so maybe the car was due for a new radiator & heater core. Engine started running close to the hot zone last summer.

Manual transmission refused to shift one day, in spite of having enough clutch fluid. Towing company fixed it by taking it & the title off my hands.

General Comments:

I bought this car from original owner up the street from me who was a jet aircraft engineer, maintenance documentation was extensive. I don't think the problems were due to poor maintenance, just not designed to go that many years and miles. A blast to drive when it wasn't in the shop for something or other. I just don't think they were supposed to go more than a hundred thousand miles, which was what I thought the Japanese were so good at doing.

1991 Mazda MX6 LX 2.2 from North America

Summary:

Overall incredible car. If you're looking for a fast, reliable, long-term car, the MX6 is the one!

Faults:

Hmm, let's see. Nothing.

General Comments:

This car is awesome. I've owned it for about 6, almost 7 years now, and I've had no problems with it.

Fuel economy is great, performance (when stock - which mine isn't) is quite surprising. When you install a cold/ram air intake, the car sounds incredible, and just flies. When you install a racing module... well, I'm sure you could figure it out. Install a Cherry-bomb muffler, and the car sounds amazing! I've beaten '06 Mustang GT's with surprising distance between us.

1991 Mazda MX6 LX 2.2 Fuel Injected from North America

Summary:

Reliable, fast, fun

Faults:

Alternator failed 2nd day after I bought it at 195670 (Normal for around 200k) 228$

Driver side Power Window Regulator (motor) replaced at 196870. 600$

I broke the Power Antenna (going to get it fixed)

Paint is fading in some spots (previous owner left it outside all the time)

Aluminum wheels are corroding kinda badly (planning on replacing these in the spring)

Sometimes one of the front speakers goes really soft (it's always only one of them and not both)

Previous owner replaced stuff over the 13 years she had it (struts, brake pads, driver side window switch, minor other items)

General Comments:

Car has lots of pep.

It shifts from 1st to 2nd kinda roughly (automatic)

Handles very well.

Interior is very cool and sophisticated. You hardly know it's a 1991. I have yet to take it on a road trip.

I have replaced lots of stuff on it, but I'm hoping there will come a point and time where I'll only have to do regular maintenance on it.

Previous owner kept up with regular maintenance as have I. I baby this car so much it's not even funny.

This is my first car, but I recommend it to anyone despite all the repairs it's cost me, it's still an awesome car.

This is my first car. The paint's faded, the radio is shot, and the e-brake froze on me once, but it never failed to start in negative degree weather, handles great, and takes a beating on and off road. Haha. Not bad for buying it off your uncle's buddy for 800 bucks.

1991 Mazda MX6 LX 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Buy a Ford Probe instead

Faults:

Car had to have two transmissions.

General Comments:

This was a nice car to replace my sporty Plymouth Laser. I was wrong. Though it looked good enough and was loaded with options, it was not very reliable.

The transmission had to be replaced twice.

The radio never seemed to work right. The tape deck never worked.

The only thing I liked about this car was the oscillating air vents in the front.

You'd have the same problems with a 2.0 litre automatic Probe as it has the same (problematic) CD4E transmission.

At least with the Probe, I would have had a dealer that I knew instead of the Mazda dealer that I never worked with before.

The Ford dealer that you knew could have taken care of it, as it was built on a Ford assembly line. And are you sure you had the 91? The 2.0 was introduced in the 93 MX-6. The 91 had a 2.2 liter (auto trans was still bad, but not as bad as the 93-97 auto trans).
