1996 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5 V6 from North America

Summary:

Reliable, good gas mileage commuter car

Faults:

Standard maintenance +

Drivers side window motor stopped working. Was going to be $400 to replace new, or $200 with a junkyard part. Passenger side is slowly failing.

The leather door liners are coming unglued from the doors.

Radio only works intermittently.

Trunk lid doesn't stay open well because the struts wore out.

Ignition lock is broken, requires key in at all times to be able to shift gears.

General Comments:

Overall for a 13 year old car, it looks very good. It has aged very well, like the RX7 of that period as well.

Overall, I have only done routine maintenance to keep this car running - couple of oil changes tire rotation, and a brake light bulb. Not bad for a used car. I think the previous owner maintained it well which always helps.

This car gets great gas mileage for a V6. I average 27-28 MPG is mixed driving. This is a commuter car for me.

It would be more fun in a 5sp, but it does have good pickup. This is not a SPORTS CAR, it is a "sporty car."

My biggest complaints with the car are that there is a lot of road noise, the A/C is weak, and the radio malfunction is annoying. DO NOT EVEN THINK OF BUYING THIS CAR IF YOU HAVE KIDS THAT NEED TO GO INTO THE BACK SEAT, ESPECIALLY REAR FACING! The car seats are very difficult to install correctly, and it is always a pain to get the kids in the car.

Overall, the car gets a plus for good gas mileage, reliability, and decent handling.

The car gets minuses for noise, glitches, and lack of cup holders. Lack of rear seat space.

1996 Mazda MX6 RS 2.0L from North America

Summary:

A hidden gem

Faults:

The driver side door lock, but can lock from the passenger side.

The boot does not stay up when opened.

The boot lock.

Rust and paint has faded, not surprising for its age, especially in a snowy region.

Replaced CV boot.

Replaced rear sway bar.

General Comments:

This is a hidden gem of a car. I bought it in 2007 to hone my manual driving skills. I did not know that this car had a cult following (believe it shares genealogy with Mazda 626 and Ford Probe), until I had a couple of stalkers - just harmless fans of this car. The curves on this car, still draw looks in 2008.

Couple of minor irritants, not surprising for a car this age. Some of them are known issues with MX6, the door locks, the boot etc. But the transmission and engine is really strong.

I bought it at 170k and sold it to a very happy school kid after reaching 180k, I moved on to a manual German import. Apparently these are known to live up to 250k. Never had any transmission or engine issues. Especially if you have the 2.0L manual.

The mileage is excellent, about 30 to 32 mpg. And with rising gas prices this is a boon. If you are looking at a used manual MX6 and know that the transmission and engine has not been messed with, buy it.

1996 Mazda MX6 LS 2.5L V6 from North America

Summary:

Be careful, the MX6 is habit forming

Faults:

The engine failed at 165000 km. Had the engine rebuilt. I have fully replaced the exhaust system. Replaced driver side window switch, and harness and motor with used parts. Replaced the clutch, battery, water pump while the engine was being rebuilt. Brakes redone.

General Comments:

I have put a lot into the car. The body is in great condition, interior is fairly clean. High-speed handling is good, V-rated tires are generally expensive. With a manual transmission the performance off the line is quick, control is nimble. This is a great hobby car, I have invested into this as much as I would in a new low end vehicle, however, I think I have much more vehicle for the money with the MX 6.
