2005 Mazda RX8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Lacking in torque

Faults:

Nothing.. yet.

General Comments:

I really liked the look of this car, both from the outside and inside.

The interior is really nice, very flashy and not the usual cheap Japanese plastic.

Although little has gone wrong with the car, my biggest disappointment is simply this car has no torque. It feels gutless, but when you look at the speedo it's really moving.. then it beeps at you as you've redlined it (again).

Also the dash seems to crack and rattle at high revs, and with the K&N I installed to replace the standard air filter, it made SO MUCH noise from the front was basically stupid. I put the original back. Not pleased overall.

2005 Mazda RX8 231ps Sat Nav 1.3 rotary from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Thirsty but AWESOME car, little oil consumption too!

Faults:

Needed a new cat converter, probably down to the very low mileage and the car previously not being driven properly.

Front brake disc warped and creaky drivers seat when cornering.

General Comments:

Not as reliable as other Mazdas, but still better than most.

Truly fantastic handling, pinpoint razor sharp steering with great weight, no body roll, good grip even in the wet, nice engine note. Unique in its class and like nothing else.

Sure it's thirsty, but it doesn't get through much oil, probably 1 litre every 3,500 miles, so why does every one complain? It may seem like more to some, but the oil sump is very small.

Mine has sat nav and the joystick is a little fiddly, and the unit isn't very quick.

Heating could be more effective, but nothing will touch it round corners.

Strato blue paintwork looks fantastic and the comfort is great, you can really use it as an everyday car. Lovely detailing, great dash, ooozes style all over.

Forget the dated S2000 which is £8k more and depreciates just as much, more reliable than the TT and less MX-5 like than the Z3!

2005 Mazda RX8 from North America

Summary:

I love it, but am afraid of the possible/probable high maintenance costs!

Faults:

This hard start thing seems to be a common theme. I sadly enough did not do my research on this car.. fell in love with it... paid way too much for the miles, my 1st clue should have been they had to put in a new battery before I could take it off the lot... my next clue was having to spend $200 for FOUR spark plugs.. and $100 to have them installed... Last week into the dealership for diagnosis: hard to start (yep after $300 for spark plugs..) they had it for the entire day - no solution..-they were kind enough to not charge me. Hopefully NOT because they knew I would be back! It goes back in the AM, hard to start, and again, the check engine light... wish me luck please!!

General Comments:

It does handle VERY nice, almost as good as a TR-7 that I owned... I love the looks and the convenience of the hidden back doors.. the sleek lines - the comfort of the seats... Lucky for me the previous owner had gone for all the cool options on the car.. very nice...love the deep blue w/the silver undercoat!

I think if you take good care of the RX8 it should be fine.

General maintenance is important.

Just trying to help.

The RX-8 has garnered a reputation for poor reliability. Sadly, I can confirm this through first hand experience.

I bought my 2005 RX8 in December 2008 with 36000 miles.

After one month it had to be towed due to flooding.

Five months later it had to be towed again because it did not start. So the dealer put in a new engine. Thank god I bought an extended warranty.

Now it is running great. The trick maybe is to let it warm up first for 2 minutes.

Otherwise I love this car. It handles terrific.
