1988 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 300TE 3.0L Inline 6 from North America

Summary:

AMAZING

Faults:

So far, alternator went bad. Other than that, just the usual brakes, tires etc... but every car has those problems. Car is in amazing condition for 20 years old.

I have a misfire which I have been hunting these past 2 years. Replaced a lot of ignition and fuel parts without success, but I will figure it out eventually.

OH. Valve stem seals. Once I had this fixed, not a drop of oil used anymore. Misfires were better and the car ran nicer.

A MUST buy car for someone who likes reliability, a Mercedes German Steel Tank for safety and space with the wagon.

General Comments:

I get ~17mpg average in the car. It has the misfire and I estimate once I get it fixed, I should be around the 21mpg average mark.

The US Spec headlights are terrible. Get some aftermarket Hella's or DEPO's ($200). OEM Bosch are great, but rare and expensive ($7-800).

Hi, I hope by now you have sorted out the misfire issue. Check something about the vacuum system - do a search over internet and presto - there's a wealth of information on this.

1988 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 2.6 from North America

Summary:

Superior rich car for bargain price

Faults:

I am having some oil leaks from gasket.

General Comments:

My car is mint condition this car gets the boy you must be rich look. Also feels big and airy in cabin, seats are comfortable air conditioner is very good, interior sound noise is nil. It is a pleasure to drive and a real bargain. Fuel Economy is good considering size of car and engine. Parts are not that expensive (labour is, shop around for a Mercedes geek mechanic).

I completely agree with this man's assessment of the 260E. I bought mine in early 2008 with >188,000 mile on it for 1200.00. Over the next year I put a good 5000.00 into it because I knew it was worth it. I now own a fine automobile that's my daily driver. It's a car one falls in love with.. It seems to do everything well.

Summary:

Nice, perfect, lovely... I am crazy for you..

Faults:

I went to service for the engine inspection. Something was wrong with injection, sometimes it suddenly was shutting down in pretty unexpected situations - crossroads or even straight road. They fixed it, but sad that the suspension needs for a serious surgery. So I sad them to change everything they find it wrong. And they did so. Nearly everything possible to change. It cost me hell of the a lot. But that's naturally understandable because my MB has beautiful 17" wheels, which causes such problems. Also I have changed sparks, plugs, oils, operating block of the gear box (it still face some problems of saltatory gear change), engine front oil-seal, and some gear box seals too because of huge oil leak.

Now I also face some inside - dashboard, panels and doors creaks.

General Comments:

This model is a masterpiece of design. It’s a 16 years old, but I still it find trend-setting, powerful, finished and sexy. You will be wrong if you expect tremendous performance of 3 liter engine. It’s rather slow, lazy, sleepy vehicle, but this thing was not created for a drag or other kinds of race. You drive slow, you listen to your perfect stereo, you keep your right hand on the armrest, and drive with the left’s forefinger, you feel perfect and comfortable in it’s seats – you enjoy the views outside the windows….

It’s a car I don’t think will be created ever again since the marketing chose to a wrong direction in the crossroad of future.

It’s also good to know that this bargain is slowly depreciated.
