1990 Mercury Cougar LS 3.8L V6 from North America

Summary:

The best car a guy could ask for

Faults:

Two ditches and an idiot that burned out her tranny in a mud hole, and she's still running strong.

The only problems I've had was her fuel pump at about 96,000 km, and her hinge pins and outside D/S handle.

General Comments:

This car is tough as nails. She's taken me through thick and thicker, starts in minus 30, and always comes back for more.

She isn't the fastest (the lack of a supercharger with the LS model), but she's a smooth ride. Her plush seats are an added plus, too.

The stock stereo system might leave you wanting if you're a bass head, but she suits my needs just fine, although the radio is getting old and kind of faulty with age.

The backseat has a lot of room for doing the no pants dance, too. ;)

It's hard to not fall in love with the Cougar. They're tough, reliable, and they have this *allure* that you can't deny. Even if you think they're ugly in the beginning, like I did, they win your heart.

1990 Mercury Cougar LX 3.8 from North America

Summary:

Solid old style car

Faults:

When the car was warm, the starter motor would not always engage. Installed a rebuilt one for 65.00.

General Comments:

This was a one owner car purchased from the state at auction (owner died, no will or heirs available) Purchase price 1,200.00.

The car is well equipped with on board computer (1990), automatic seat belts, power windows, sun roof, power antenna, A/C and cruise.

It works great as a second car to my 2010 Toyota Corolla. It gets exactly 1/2 the gas mileage of Corolla at 17.5 mpg.

The Cougar seems like a solid car and is capable of going anywhere, however, I have owned 3 Ford Tauruses (1994, 1996, 1999) and that's a better car gas mileage wise, between 24-30 mpg.

As to whether this is the car for you, well that depends on your pocket book, expectations, car condition and price. It is rear wheel drive and no airbags. Repairs should be fairly cheap compared to Volvo or BMW. I would buy another based on my 1000 miles put on, if price and condition were there. Also buy as low mileage as you can, so it's not a money pit for repairs.

One year later same car. Water pump went out, hoses, labor and pump 225.00. The power window motor and gearing went - part and labor 125.00.

6,000 miles and those were only expenses, looking good.

Well I just sold the 1990 Cougar in review. Bought for 1,200 and sold it fourteen months later for 1,500 cash. My repairs came to 400, so it could be said the cost to own was 100.00. Going to buy something with great gas mileage, Geo Metro comes to mind. My only worries with the Cougar were head gaskets tend to go on the 3.8, and paint was going. Hope I buy as well next time.

Best to all, Bill.

1990 Mercury Cougar XR7 SC 3.8 Supercharged from North America

Summary:

Best car I have ever driven

Faults:

The only thing that has gone wrong with this car is the drivers side window came out of the track at 245,000km.

General Comments:

This car is absolutely amazing. The performance that comes out of this supercharged 3.8L V6 at 8lbs of boost is unbelievable. The full independent electronic suspension is amazing; kicks into firm ride when you give er' all she's got.

The seats are the most comfortable things I have ever sat in.

The faster you go in this car, the better it runs. It likes to be pushed. At the drag strip it is very hard to find someone to run against me on Friday night's when people just go out there for fun.

1990 Mercury Cougar LS 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

My driving excitement!

Faults:

New left head light.

Engine overhauled.

Transmission is slipping now. Not bad but I know it is coming time for a new one.

That's about all I have.

General Comments:

Since I got this car, I did put a lot of care into it. I fixed very minor things and she feels as good as new. I must say she has never left me anywhere stranded. The engine is still strong and has no knocking or pinging what so ever! The only thing that concerns me is the trans. I might have to have it rebuilt. I will only because the engine is VERY strong. It would be a good investment.
