1989 Mercury Sable 3.8 6-cylinder from Mexico

Summary:

Nightmare, a headache and a lemon all together

Faults:

The fan blower failed at 20,000 kilometers.

The radiator blew at 25,000 kilometers.

The fan failed again at 30,000 kilometers.

The engine overheated almost every week.

The Air Conditioning was not cooling at 30,000 kilometers.

A second radiator was required at 35,000 kilometers.

Head Gasket blew at 40,000 kilometers.

Oil pressure problems.

General Comments:

It was a nightmare after the first 30,000 kilometers.

The car almost never worked from that point and it's a money pit.

It will let you down almost everytime.

Overheating problems every week.

Horrible service from dealer.

Stay away from this lemon if you want to avoid a major headache and ruin your life.

I can't sell it because nobody wants to buy it, because it got so many problems.

Most mechanics don't know how to fix it.

1989 Mercury Sable LS Wagon 3.8 gas eater from North America

Summary:

A luxurious crap-heap

Faults:

Transmission - replaced twice.

Power steering - trouble until the day I got rid of it.

Power windows - stopped, started, then stopped again. It worked the last time I checked.

Heater - died.

Cracked windshield - my brother's fault.

Motor mounts - made the power of the 3.8 useless unless you wanted the whole car to jolt.

Rear window wiper/defroster - stopped working shortly after purchasing, disconnected due to an electrical problem it was causing.

Paint - clear-coat got all messed up (I've heard it's somewhat common for these cars).

Leather seats - no complaint.

General Comments:

It was a boat. Couldn't stop too quickly, but I was willing to ignore it while sitting in the comfortable leather seats.

Couldn't start too quickly (broken motor mounts), but the sound system was decent (no CD), so I dealt with it.

I would've kept the car if I thought I could've fixed it for good. It was nothing but trouble for my mom, so when it was passed down to me, I decided to try and sell it. That's when I found out what a used 1989 Mercury Sable LS wagon is worth. I was offered $200, $400, even $700! Fed up, I finally donated it because frankly it wasn't worth my time.
