1974 MG Midget Mk 3 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good, honest, little, open top sport car!

Faults:

I am a classic fanatic, so I can usually tell when something is likely to cause problems. Midgets need attention, particularly to the twin SU Carbs, which once set should cause no problems. The A series engine is bullet proof if regular oil changes are made.

I have recently rebuilt all the front suspension. Regreasing and regreasing cannot be emphasised enough with regards to the suspension.

Waxoxyl the whole car every year.

General Comments:

Unless you are willing to work on a Midget, then do not buy one!

These cars are over 30 years old now and need some respect.

They keep up with modern traffic on by-passes etc, but struggle with gearing on motorways.

Interior is very cosy, and the heater keeps you warm in winter.

Roof down completely transforms the car, and you realise why you bought an MG Midget.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

1974 MG Midget 1500 1.5 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A cheap and fun classic, not to be relied on

Faults:

New engine needed.

New differential needed.

New brakes needed.

Water pump gasket failed.

Rear oil seal failed.

General Comments:

The car has decent engine performance, and pulls well in each gear.

It corners well, with sharp steering responses, but has a rough ride and lots of scuttle shake.

The gearbox is quite hard to use, but has a mechanical feel to it, with a positive shift action.

Mid corner bumps can unsettle the car, making the car to feel very skittish, causing some heart stopping moments!

There is a surprising amount of room for myself, a 6 foot 1 driver, and a passenger of the same height will have plenty of room in the comfortable, yet very hot interior (engine heat comes in creating a sauna like effect!)

Road presence is amusing, as the car is so small, people smile, point and sometimes wave! which adds to the character of the car.

It's a shame the car is so unreliable, as this takes the pleasure away from the experience on the whole.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

You have to remember, this car is over 30 years old, so there will be some problems.
