1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Good gas saver

Faults:

The exhaust manifold cracked around 105,000.

The transmission stopped going into reverse around 108,000.

It had a major exhaust leak underneath the car.

General Comments:

This car is great for getting from a-b and saving on gas.

It has no power on the street probably because its not turbo.

The handling is sloppy with a lot of body roll.

1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0L dohc 16v from North America

Summary:

Highly recommended fast sports car!

Faults:

Let out white smoke.

Idled at high rpm a few times once started, but went back down after driving a while.

Rpm would go up and down on there own at idle.

Window came off track.

CD player doesn't play burned CDs.

Tape player doesn't work.

Rubber seal on the hatchback came off.

General Comments:

Great car if regularly tuned up. The manual version is fast.

The car has custom exhaust, which is extremely loud.

The stick shift is in the perfect shifting position.

I'm 6'6" and can fit in it okay, except for the back seats, I have to sit sideways and duck the whole time.

The car is so light it peels out all the way to 3rd gear at 40 mph, with a lot of pull and 3 people in the car. It's hard not to peel out in the rain though, even with high grip fat tires.

I have beaten many cars in races. I've gone 120 in it and still had lots of rpm left.

Love the pop up headlights.

Overall a fast and smooth car. Highly recommended.

1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 2.0 Non-turbo from North America

Summary:

LOVE IT

Faults:

Okay, this was my first car. I do not recommend a foreign car as a first car, parts are very expensive as is labor. I have had several problems with my eclipse. I have replaced the transmission. Also the engine. Also timing belt, all belts (I had a squealing problem). also I have some electrical issues with it. My dashboard used to flicker. I have also replaced the front struts as well as lower ball joints. I replaced the entire exhaust system. I have also replaced the alternator. as well as harmonic balancer. And the gas tank was leaking if I filled it past a half tank. It seems like one thing after another. It is also not a very roomy car. It is very small inside.

General Comments:

But I have to admit, that as much trouble as it has given me, I love that car to death and will have a very hard time when it comes time to part with it. It's cute, sporty, fast and it attracts guys like flies on you know what. It's a cute girly car. And if you have the money to put into it, then by all means, buy one. I personally like the body kits for the older Eclipses anyways. With racing rims, it looks best.

1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS 1.8 from North America

Faults:

What hasn't gone wrong with this car.

I replaced the tranny.

I replaced the clutch.

I replaced both front axles.

I replaced the head gaskets.

I replaced the oil pan.

I replaced the mass air flow sensor.

I replaced the ecu.

Needed new brakes.

I replaced the alternator.

Rear struts need to be replaced constant clicking all the time.

I replaced the belts.

Car needs to be turned over twice to start.

The car is is still leaking and I found out it's a seal up under the transmission close to a 1000 dollar job.

My 91 eclipse gs blows you fix one thing something else goes.

I haven't even had it a year the interior is great and the paint in awesome and shape of the car is hot.

It sure looks pretty sitting there ha!

We are right along with you... maybe our Eclipse was built right behind yours on the assembly line. Bought it for our daughter's first car, drove less than 100 miles and it is a really nice looking yard ornament. Timing Chain is bad, the radiator does not suck in from the extra fluid container so it over heated and now we have to replace the cylinder head... electrical is a whole different problem. Like I said, it looks pretty sitting there, but I sure wish it had an attachment for a harness set and we would at least move it around with the horses pulling it.

I understand the problems you had... but according to your statements, you bought the car at 140000 miles. That's lot for any car, and if it had been driven hard, of course you are going to have problems. No matter what car you have, if not driven correctly and taken care of, it's gonna be crap. Just sayin...

140,000 miles shouldn't be a problem for a foreign car though. I've seen Nissans with 250K miles that are still running strong. I've seen Toyotas with 290K miles that are still running strong!

I also have an Eclipse. I have had a lot of problems out of mine also. My shock housing is now separated from the frame of the car (which is rusted through).

My car only has 180K miles on it, which is a disgrace to a foreign car to be breaking down at such low mileage!
