Don't think anyone is trying to prove a point but rather just an observation - a lot of people simply just don't talk about cars as fondly anymore. Back in the day myself and many others enjoyed their car and got good value for money from them.
Nowadays it seems to me all you hear is complaints about how much it costs to fix, why are they so complex, what is government/manufacturers doing to ruin cars next with stupid rules and electric gimmicks no one asked for, etc etc etc.
P.S I am not saying older is always better (I like old and new cars) plus let's not let this be one of those comments sections that go on forever with this old vs new debate that ends up getting the thread locked ;)

Mitsubishi like Nissan were good... back in the day ;) Not now. Oh dear Lord no.

You said a car is “not as good” if it needs wipers, tires, and brakes replaced. I don’t think that’s a fair comment.

Check out the comments on the most recent 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage review on here. There is a fully detailed procedure on how to make wiper blades last much longer than they should. A little time consuming, but very interesting.

Perhaps I should have been clearer - EGR valve repair and dual mass flywheel (very expensive) are way too much in regards to costs, see the review (though I'm not the original author by the way).
I acknowledge the items you mention were maintenance and I never said that made any car bad.
Also note this is a UK review - in recent years the cost of repairs here has risen considerably (USA for example although expensive generally has better car culture and cheaper car running costs), and point being made is these repairs costs were simply unheard of (in run of the mill cars) a little over 20 years ago.

I think the biggest point here is the cost of motoring in general has went up massively in recent years, even before the pandemic and cost of living crisis. Worldwide, not just in the UK. But this I feel is a topic too large to discuss on this car review site.

That would make sense except new wiper blades, brakes, and tires are all routine maintenance. So, the comment you replied to doesn’t prove that point you want to make.
