1996 Mitsubishi Space Gear 2.8 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Very dependable and fairly cheap to run

Faults:

I'm getting some grey smoke at start up, cold start chugs smoke for about ten seconds, but is OK after the engine warms up. Wondering if the glow plugs are weak?

General Comments:

Great for all I need. I can go anywhere, and it has very versatile seating.

1997 Mitsubishi Space Gear 4X4 (Delica) GLX 2.5 turbo diesel from Portugal

Summary:

Very nice

Faults:

Just 1 week after the purchase of this workhorse, I noticed that the coolant level was lowering. As these vans suffer from a bad quality expansion tank and the one I had was cracking, I replaced it for a after market one. The problem remained, although not as serious as before. I found out it was the water pump, and now it just runs and runs.

Also had the timing belts replaced (the 2500cc uses two!! But the 2800cc has no cam belt).

General Comments:

The good: Consumption is around 10/11L; it's quite good for a two ton.

The 4X4 2500cc version (mine) has no center diff, so it can only be used in slippery situations (gravel, snow, mud...), but it goes anywhere!!! It has the original 215/80 r15 and it doesn't need bigger tyres... It has 7 + 1 seats; the + 1 is only for small children. The cabin is HUGE, it has air con that's working just fine, cup holder, electric windows and mirrors.

The bad: Slow, but it's not a car to go fast because it's very, very tall and can be quite scary around the corners; watch out for roundabouts. I recommend the use of wheel spacers.
