You said that your Altima has a 145 cubic inch engine. That is about the size of a moped engine. Maybe that is why your power is lacking. My 97 GXE is very comfortable and quicker than my old 94 Cavalier Z24 3.1L V6.

I just acquired a 1997 Altima, 5 speed manual transmission, and it rocks! It is extremely fast (150 hp), very comfotable, and it looks great too! It handles really well around turns and is great on both open highways and city driving (21/29 mpg). I think it is a great investment and it definitely leaves the competition in the dust. It is also great value for your money. Stick shift rules!! Better performace, lasts longer, and a lot more fun to drive :-)

I bought my '97 Altima LE almost a year ago; now at 70k, it's getting rough. I think it needs a new O2 sensor. From what I can tell, this is a very common problem with the Altima, but easily fixed. I love the car otherwise, it's got enough punch, sporty enough, and most important, the trunk is big enough for a sealed box with a pair of 12" drivers in it. (Bass rules!)

I recently purchased my 97 Altima GXE as my first car. I have knowledge in the mechanics field, and this car truly impresses me. I have spent hours working to get the front speakers to work once again. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't find the problem. The car is a dream come true. Power, looks,...girls..., and its soooo smooth.

This is directed to the guy with the speaker problem. It sounds like you might need some new front speakers. (I being on my second set of speakers in my crappy ford) If not, it might be a wiring problem. I also have a comment about the guy who had his catch on fire. WHAT DID YOU DO TO IT TO MAKE IT BLOW UP??? I have never herd of an Altima just catch on fire like that unless somebody didn't remember to check something.

Well, I have owned Nissan's for the last twenty years. Not Altima models, but the cheaper Sentra and Stanzas. I put over two hundred thousand on both of them with minimal repairs.
I just drove a 97 Altima with 51k miles and stick shift. Wow is all I can say. I am going to buy it if I can get the dealer down to around five thousand. It is the cheaper model also, not the LE.
Nissans are good cars, change the oil and filter and the antifreeze. Use distilled water in radiator only. Do the manufactures service schedules at a Nissan dealership. Don't drive like a fool and they will go on forever.

Hey, I have a 97 Altima Gxe. Its rebuilt, but it halls a**
I have a problem though. The speaker of the car only 1 works. and the other 3 are good, but they don't sound what do I do?

The front speaker issue is pretty common, I got it on my 97 Altima also. I replaced the radio and one worked for 1 week, then it died, so I do not think it is the wiring, I think it has to do with the speakers. Next, I will change them and see.

I just purchased a 97 Altima and none of my speakers work. I think problem is that the previous owner had a system (he/she left all the cables in the car) and he probably unplugged all the car speakers.

I drive a 97 auto gxe. Stick is always better, but this car is amazing. I had the same front speaker problem. The speakers up front blow easily, so just replace em'. The sound I get from an intake alone is just beautiful. I am running at 105,000 miles, and I have never had a problem with the car. Use fuel injector cleaner occasionally, and the car likes it, trust me. I promote this car to the fullest extent, and I can say its going to last me a while.

I have a 97 Altima gxe and I have the same speaker problem which probably are the speakers. I love the car. It has great power, looks good, sounds great, just an all around great car.

I bought a 97 Altima gxe at about 98k and it's still running at 140k. It's a great car, but had a couple problems with it. I got in my car after work the one day and there goes the starter. My friends had to push my car in reverse while I popped the clutch and she started right up. Then the one day I get into the car and I find the clutch was almost completley limp, it wouldn't come back up when I pressed it down... got that fixed the next day. The oil pan gasket leaks a bit as I was told when I got my oil changed and oh yeah, my front speakers don't work. I like the way it drives and its has good push in first gear, but if one more thing goes wrong I might get rid of it.

I had a Nissan Altima and it was the worst experience ever. It blew up after 1 month of owning the car in my driveway. Then about 5 months later it ignited into flames. So if you people would look up Nissan car fire history from the 80's to current you will see not only car fires, but bad SAFETY-ratings and other major problems. You will not want your Altima. Search for yourself.
