I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with 105,000 miles. We replaced the battery and now when the car is cranked it dies. When I push the gas really hard it finally stays cranked. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Another "HAPPY" '04 Maxima owner here with the same problem. First I can't believe all the run around from Nissan and the Dealer all these years with this trans. problem. I also bought my MAX brand new off the truck after finding it online. Same trans. problem as all the above has brought to light and also a "thumping" in the right front tire area. Had the struts changed (very expensive!) at about 48,000 miles and the problem returned shortly. Later found out, that this might be a wheel bushing problem and corrected for only $300 or so... jury is still out on that one. My question is this in a few parts:
1.) Has anybody got a bottom line answer on this trans. problem?
2.) Has anybody got an answer for the "thumping" noise in the right/left front tire areas -or- had it themselves??
3.) I can't BELIEVE that Nissan knew about this... especially the trans. problem and stood back and did nothing about it, other than milk it for all it's worth to make money on it, which they did... Everyone knows that car companies do recalls for safety issues and not mechanical... but this surely was a mechanical issue for sure!!
It looks like I was way down the line... when clearly this problem was going on for years!!!.. Can anyone please shed some light on my questions!!
And like everyone else, I loved the style of the new Maxima at the time... but I can honestly say I will never buy Nissan again!!!.. All they had to do was "step up" and that would've gone a long way!!!

I have a 2004 Maxima and recently started having problems with the tranny slipping and jerking. Took to dealership and they acted as if it was their first time hearing of the problem. Suggested that I replace the trans. I will be filing a complaint with the NHTSA and Nissan. Nissan need to recall the tranny problem because they know it's a problem. I've had Maxima's for the past 10 years and now I am going to have to switch to something else. Can't trust Nissan anymore.

Okay, so my 04 Maxima did the whole jerkin thing until it gave up on me, so I'm gonna call Nissan and complain, and if nothing is done after reading all the comments, I will file a law suit please email me at delrealsandra@aol.com if you have any info or help for me.

People are FINALLY waking up to the fact that Japanese cars have LOTS of problems. The solution is very simple. Buy a Malibu or a Fusion.

Actually Nissan is one of the worst Japanese brands. Honda and Toyota are still far better than any Ford or Chevy.

I've been having the same transmission problems as everyone else with my 04 Maxima. I bought the car used three years ago unaware of any problems, now I feel trapped driving only to and from work.
I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and another with Nissan. After reading these complaints, this is insane. Please, if there's a support group or if someone files a class action suit, contact me. zoestarchild@yahoo.com

Hello fellow 2004 Maxima owners, I too feel your pain with the transmission and I think Nissan needs to address it. I have a suggestion for all of us in this expensive mess. Contact a news company and tell them the issues, if we all do this than at least one of the news media company's will run with this story and than Nissan will have some explaining to do. I posted an email to Dateline MSNBC yesterday with all the details. I hope this will help and it won't hurt. If we band in numbers than we WILL BE HEARD. Please take just a few minutes to do this, and with some patience we can all be happy with our cars.

I'm also an owner of 04 Maxima, and recently I visited a dealership and found that they provide a 10 years warranty for the tranny. I spoke to a sales person about 05 Maxima and it still had another 6 years warranty for it's transmission.
I'm just wondering if it's a bonus offer from the dealership or if it's been extended by Nissan.

I'm 2004 Nissan Maxima owner. I have had this car for almost 2 years. I recently took my car to the Nissan dealership, and I was told by the service manager that my car needs an engine mount replaced, and the transmission fluid needs to be flushed. I got the engine mount replaced, but after days my car is still jerking, and still has the same rattling noise coming from the front. I was told by one of the technicians that my transmission is actually going bad, that I need a new transmission. I used to own a 2000 Taurus that had a transmission problem that I got rid of it for the 2004 Maxima. unfortunately I'm having the same problem, what can we really do have Nissan recall this 2004 Nissan Maxima transmission?

Like most of you, I'm also an owner of a 2004 Nissan Maxima with transmission problems, I went ahead and replaced my Valve Body part # 31705-8Y002, and now everything is back to normal. My shifts are even better than what I remembered. I spent about $800 for the valve body and $60 for new transmission fluid, and replaced it myself because my cousin is a mechanic. It took us about 2 hours, but not as bad as I thought. I strongly recommend doing this if you have no other means of transportation, and cannot wait for the recall to come out.

I guess I will add to this ever increasing list of bad transmissions. I own a 2004 Maxima and was crossing my fingers that I would be one of the lucky ones to escape, but a couple months before the car was to be paid off, I started experiencing all the symptoms that many of you have described. I am just wondering if replacing the valve body assembly is worth the hassle? I want my car to last 2 maybe 3 years at the most.

I have a 2005 Maxima SE, which appears to have the same common transmission problem. Before the dealer determined that it is a transmission problem, I was charged over $500.00 for the replacement of two engine cam sensors, reset transmission computer chips and flush transmission. The dealer also wanted to get into the valve body to change more sensor without giving a cost estimate. I had them stop that process, otherwise this type of work would have cost me a fortune. I'm in the process to contact the Nissan Corp. regarding this issue.

OK, finally got the car back with the new valve body in it. Functions like new, it seems to be the problem when shifting becomes the issue in this car. When warmed up, I had shift shock going from 1 - 2 & 2 - 1, slipping from 2 - 3. When cold, the transmission performed like it should. This has been going on 2 years, finally my check engine light went on and threw a code for the valve body. Seems that Nissan isn't going to replace the part until the code shows it needs replacing. I also contacted 1-800-nissan1 and have a case number, hopefully I'll receive some monetary help? Cost $1762.84.
