1993 Nissan Micra L 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Well built, cheap super-mini

Faults:

1 x 10 amp fuse blown = 10 pence repair bill!

General Comments:

Good points:

For a small car the build quality is excellent and the perky 16 valve engine gives adequate around town performance. OK on the motorway up-to 80 miles an hour.

100% reliable and cheap to service.

Cheap tax for the 1.0 version and very low insurance rating.

Good head room (I am 6ft tall and don't have a problem).

Bad points:

Braking is very poor as the wheels and brake discs are only small.

Suspension and seat support is quite poor which means turning corners is uncomfortable even at low speeds!

Doesn't have an intermittent wiper on the 1.0L which is a pain at times!

1993 Nissan Micra LX 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Utterly dependable supermini

Faults:

Nothing.

7 yr old battery finally gave up the ghost.

Erm.... had a puncture, hardly Nissan's fault.

Buy one from a granny and grin with maniacal laughter at the bargain you just got.

General Comments:

I will never, ever, ever take the mickey out of Micras ever again. This is a fantastically reliable car. I'm 6'1" and comfy in it. This 1.0 can do an indicated 100mph!! (maybe optimistic).

Nippy round town and easy to park. Great visibility. Cheap to run.

The only downside? Not a motorway hack. A roads are fine - M roads, well, it is only a supermini. Can't have everything.

Want a Micra of the same era which will handle the motorway as well as A-roads? Buy yourself the 1.3 variant.

1993 Nissan Micra L 1.0 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Buy one now!

Faults:

Mechanically - only a squeaky wiper linkage.

Wear and tear - 3 tyres and an exhaust system.

General Comments:

Bad points - a few tiny rust spots, slightly clattery timing chain when the engine is cold, the sump drain plug and the oil filter are a bugger to get at.

Good points - always starts, always goes well, fine engine, no timing belt to replace.

If only all cars were this dependable!

1993 Nissan Micra L 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Runs almost like an electric car

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

What a great car. This is used as our second car as it is cheap to run, insure etc.

It is quiet and economical, but the 16v free revving engine means it is a great drive round town. On motorways it is perfectly adequate as long as you don't push on too hard.

Only thing that disappoints is the 2 speaker radio - a bit crap and no clock or trip counter in the L model.

1993 Nissan Micra L 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Reversing light switch failed, according to garage, not an uncommon fault.

Odd buzzing from gearstick at speed, which stops if you put the slightest pressure on the gearstick.

Very squeaky wipers!

General Comments:

5 years old and very reliable, hasn't broken down and doesn't squeak - well screwed together.

1993 Nissan Micra Dot 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

This car is five years old now and so far, absolutely nothing has gone wrong.

General Comments:

Ridiculously reliable and durable. Five years of London driving (slow, clutch heavy and generally wearing) have done nothing to impact on reliability. If anything, at 20,000 miles it's just getting going. Handles the motorway reasonably too.
