I too have a 2000 Sentra GXE 1.8. I was just informed that my mass air flow sensor had failed, causing the check engine light to com on. There is certainly a problem with this part. See- http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Reliability.aspx?modelid=9604&src=vip. It reports that this model has this problem.
The dealer quoted me over $800.00 just for the part. When I questioned the price, they offered it at a discounted price of $568.00 plus an hour labor @ 85.00. I researched this and found that the part listed for $488.00. I ended up getting from a dealer in AZ for $366.00, and 10 minutes to install. What a rip off.

I also have a Nissan Sentra and my problems are very similar. I had my sensors replaced, but my service engine light still comes on sporadically. But, what upsets me the most is my CD player works when it wants to which is usually 2 or 3 times a week. I would love to get it replaced from somewhere like Best Buy or Circuit City, but due to the way Nissan built the cd player in the dash I'm having problems finding one that will fit and look right in the dash. Can anyone help? email me at kutty244@yahoo.com.

Just bought a 2000 Nissan Sentra with 114k on it, and within 3 weeks of purchase it's in the shop and the mechanic says it's the mass airflow sensor. Other than that, it's been a good car so far.

I bought the car with a little over 100k miles on it. In a year and a half I have had the following problems:
CD Player does not work, replaced with new deck (and new system since the speakers were blown)
Fuel sensor died, car thought I was out of gas. That coasted a few hundred dollars.
A/C stopped blowing cold air, had to replace a compressor that was under warranty after it had already been replaced once by the previous owner.
Battery replaced.
Turned out the battery was not the problem. ALTERNATOR replaced.
Three or so gasket leaks, one valve cover two other. Had to be replaced.
I'm 18, this is my first car. So far, I have learned a lot about fixing problems myself with cars, so I suppose it's a good first car. Expensive to fix though. All this in a year and a half! Since the gaskets, the car has been running great without a problem. This is probably the longest time I have had without a problem with it.
It better not break again, only thing that hasn't broken in the engine is the engine itself.
Pros... um good gas mileage? After my upgrades the sound system is a beast? Well... that's my doing.

I have a 2000 Nissan Sentra GXE and it was stalling. The mechanic told me that I had several recalls on my car. I brought it to the dealership and they fixed the problems associated with the recall for free. One of the recalls was for a crank shaft position sensor. That's what was causing the car to just turn off while I was just driving it. Currently there are 7 recalls on this model, so if I were you, I'd check them out.

I have the same model and the same mentioned problems (air mass flow sensor, A/C problem, and CD player problem). I hope my car runs well until I graduate!!!

I just bought a 2000 Nissan Sentra. Pretty car.
The CD player and speakers don't work. But other than that, I love it.

I don't have the stalling or the cd problems, but I did have to get the recall sensors replaced. The problem occured while I was driving down the interstate. I was never notified by Nissan of any recall.
Now at 82K miles I have a similar problem that my battery is completely dead. I haven't had it replaced, I'm looking around the net to comments such as yours. After I get it jumped, the engine dies if I let it idle.
Another strange problem, since I had the car, if its cold out and the car isn't warmed up, the car will "jump" as if the engine is cutting out. In a few minutes the engine warms up and then gives no more problems. Seems to happen when the temp is around 50 or below outside.
