2000 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 from North America

Summary:

Costly and frustrating

Faults:

2 windows don't work - had to buy windows and regulators, and when I went to put them in, I found that the 50 cent clips are all broke. I cannot return the 2 motors and the 2 regulators because I bought them on ebay. I LOST big time. Also, no one seems to have the clips - I tried everywhere. It seems like you have to buy the new window also if your clips are broke, and it is a common problem.

Also, I need to put in an intake, and they have to open the engine to put in new gaskets - a big job and costly.

The track light stays on, and the anti-lock brake light stays on. My car is lit up more than my Christmas tree is.

The fan for the car motor runs at different speeds, and only the low speed worked. I replaced that myself.

The dealership is nasty and costly. They just don't care. GM doesn't care to fix the problems that are common in their cars. SO I Don't CARE TO BUY GM ANYMORE.

I also need ONE CLIP for a broken clip on the right hand drivers side, anyone help me somehow? Is there somewhere to find this piece?

2000 Oldsmobile Alero 3.4 liter V6 from North America

Summary:

This car is falling apart

Faults:

I have now replaced three window motors or regulators.

Turn signals are faulty, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Upholstery is coming apart.

General Comments:

Other than the defective windows and turn signals, this car has been pretty reliable. I feel there should have been a recall on the window motors/regulators.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 V6 from North America

Summary:

Engineers know how to calculate!

Faults:

The problems have mostly begun this year.

First, a wheel bearing went bad (300$ @ 100,000 km/60,000 miles).

Then, I had a very common problem for GM's 3.4 liter: the intake gasket was leaking (600$ @ 110,000km), and today, my fuel pump let me down... (980$ @ 118,000km).

Before that, a power steering hose came loose, but the car was still under warranty, and since I've had the car, I had to replace 2 fan resistance thingies (50$ each).

For the rest, it's normal wear, but I'm starting to doubt the quality of this car, which is why I gave it a 6 for reliability. Although, considering how relatively cheap this car is, I gave it a 7 (O.K.) for running costs.

Acceptable performance (year 2000 standards), noisy front brakes, noisy original tires, good fuel economy on the highway (8.2l/100kms @ 120km/h).

One thing is sure, since the troubles I've had affect almost all Aleros/Malibus/Grand Ams, GM is making big bucks on the aftermarket. Hence, my next car will definitively NOT be a GM or any other GM affiliate (Isuzu, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn).

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS Sedan 3.4L V 6 engine from North America

Summary:

I wish the problems / fixes were more widely known because it is a nice car despite all the problems

Faults:

The low tire pressure light comes on too often.

My fan for the heater/ac will not operate until I turn it to the 3rd position.

My automatic diver's seat got stuck as though it was off the track and would not adjust back and forth. My local garage mechanic took the seat out of the car and banged it several times. He reinstalled it and now it works fine, but I always wonder when it will stop again.

My security light came on, I could start the car, but then it would stall out. And then it would not restart for about 20 minutes. I discovered the problem was the ignition switch on the steering column. It was replaced at a cost of $525.00. Evidently the car thought that I was trying to steal it, so it kept turning itself off!

My taillights burn out very frequently.

The trunk torsion bar broke.

When the trunk is opened after rain, water drips into the trunk onto the trunk contents.

The car made a grinding sound when I turned the wheel either left or right.

General Comments:

Despite all the faults I still love the car. It handles beautifully, it is comfortable, and it is sporty looking.
