2000 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4 from North America

Summary:

Strong engine, but poor wear and tear

Faults:

I have had to replace the rotors once so far. (38,000 miles. not under warranty)

Also, I too have heard the growling sounds that the brakes make constantly, yet the dealership says that my pads are at 80%.

The leather bucket seats have started to wear badly especially the driver's seat. (not covered under warranty)

And just recently the leather on the dashboard has split and started to roll up or bubble up. I contacted the dealership in my area and the manufacturer and it is not covered under warranty.

Most problems with my Alero have been cosmetic, it still runs great however, it is only 3 years old and starting to look very worn, even when I take immaculate care of my vehicle. Very disappointing.

General Comments:

I will be contacting the BBB and suggest everyone else do the same. The price of this car is too high if the manufacturer is not going to back up its product when it is obviously a consistent problem.

Our Alero is a major LEMON!! Routers have been replaced 3 times now. The car has been in the shop 4 times since the last routers were replaced due to the fact that the automatic locks stopped working. The first time it was due to a leak on the drivers side that corroded the wires. That was fixed the first time under warranty. It happened again and again, no longer under warranty. Just took car in shop this morning to have the same thing repaired again. Nice looking car, but way too many problems. The car is only 3 years old and only 57,000 kms.

2000 Oldsmobile Alero GL 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Cannot wait until my lease is up and it is time to turn the car in

Faults:

I have had constant problems with the brake system so far. Numerous times the brakes have been replaced as well as the rotors. It seems as though every time I get a brake job, I expect to get new rotors. At one time, I had the rotors replaced by the dealer after arguing that it was the Oldsmobile's problem. He agreed that the car has "cheap parts". I keep up very well with all the maintenance therefore, I am baffled when I get my brakes done.

I also noticed that the car does not run as smooth as it did when I first got the car. This issue began at about 20,000 miles.

The car does make a loud grinding sound when I turn the wheel. When explained to the dealer, he said this was not a problem to worry about.

The interior of the car is very hard to upkeep. I constantly have it detailed and it never seems to look as wonderful as it did before.

The handle to the rear passenger door does not work at all. It takes several times to jerk it open from the outside.

Gas is high in price to begin with. I travel 5 miles back and forth to work and I am still filling up 2 times a week.

I am currently investigating the mystery of my Service Engine Soon light that will not go off. Has been looked at by my garage and no reason for it.

This car is not at all the value that I paid. I cannot wait until the lease is up.

General Comments:

Love the look of the car. In fact, that is the top reason I liked that car. Very roomy. All the temperature controls are great. Handles the road very well at high speed. Accelerates to high speed pretty quickly considering the smaller engine.

I own a 2002 Alero with a manual 5 speed transmission and just recently had it in to the shop for repairs. I also experienced the loud grinding noise that came from the front end (especially when making sharp left hand turns)... the garage ended up putting in heavier/thicker transmission oil (actually what is used in a Saturn). Apparently, there is a bulletin available to GM Service Depts that explains what needs to be done when customers complain about this problem.
