2001 Oldsmobile Alero GL 3.4 from North America

Summary:

A fun way to drive

Faults:

The only thing that has went wrong with my car is the turn signals, which occasionally stop working.

But, I received a recall notice in the mail about the switch that may have a crack in it the other day, and all I have to do is take it to the dealership.

Other than that, NO PROBLEMS!

General Comments:

My Alero is a very fun and safe car to drive.

Recently, someone ran a stop sign and hit my front fender, and I was forced to drive a Chevy Malibu as my rental while the Alero was being fixed, OH MY GOODNESS! I tell you, I could not wait until my car was ready 5 days later.

I definitely missed my car while it was away from me. Oldsmobile has spoiled me!

2001 Oldsmobile Alero GLS 3.4 from North America

Summary:

This is a very nice looking and performing car, but expect some reoccurring repairs and common bugs

Faults:

Front brake rotors deteriorated at 14,000 miles; Dealer replaced free.

Blower resistor pack failed at 30,000 miles; no speeds 1+2.

Cruise control switch failed at 25,000 miles; it would not keep cruise on once released.

General Comments:

This car is quick, great handling, fun to drive, and looks sharp. However the "little" repairs and part failures have gotten annoying. The front brakes were eating pads and rotors until I installed "premium" ones.

Thanks for this review. I had brake problems real early and had to spend $350+ to fix the problem. I think the problem is back again and it's only been about 15-20,000 miles, so I'll look into the premium rotors you recommended. I'm also having the resistor problem, but I'm still under extended warranty some I'm going to see about getting that fixed. Also, right now I'm having the faulty directional problem, which apparently is related to a bad hazard switch. I've had the dealership look at this problem twice now and they haven't been able to figure it out. This is a fun car, but American car makers have to do something about all this shoddy workmanship. I personally have had enough.

Summary:

Poor quality

Faults:

Security system locked up. Had to replace wheel bearing. Currently have to repair the lower intake gaskets and water pump at 65000 miles. Breaks has been replaced once and need it again. Door on driver side makes a lot of noise. On 2nd set of tires. Writing on stereo buttons is peeling off.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero from North America

Summary:

Not happy with it yet - outstanding problem

Faults:

Power steering gear assembly

Automatic shifter button sticky

Back of passenger seat (pocket) ripped away from back of seat.

General Comments:

Last winter there were 4 occasions when the steering seemed frozen. I was able to free it up by tugging from side to side. The power steering gear assembly was replaced and all seemed o.k., until this winter when it has already happened again. So far, the dealership has not found the problem. A little worried about the problem not being resolved as of yet - disappointed really.

Shifter button would not press in unless it was pressed from low on the button. Dealership replaced, so far so good.

Back of passenger seat - pocket - ripped away. Repaired through the dealership.

I won't be happy with the car until my frozen steering problem is resolved.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero from North America

Summary:

I hate it

Faults:

Rotors need replaced at 8000 miles. Vibrations in the brake pedal.

4 fuel injectors needed replaced due to something with the leak of the heat with antifreeze going into the engine. it was taken to the dealers continuously.

Now the hub is bad.

General Comments:

The car drives well especially in winter time.

There is too many trips to the dealership and inconvenience. Not reliable.

2001 Oldsmobile Alero GL 2.4L 4-cylinder from North America

Summary:

Alero is a good car that will last a long time if it is well taken care of

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong with this car so far.

The day I got the car (it had 47095 miles on it at the time) the turn signal relay went out, but the dealer fixed it and it hasn't been a problem since.

At 56000 I had a minor wreck and hit the front bumper. 2 weeks later the power steering pump went out. I'm not sure if the power steering failure had anything to do with the wreck and fixing it cost about $200.

The front driver's side seat had a 4 inch rip in it that I sewed up myself. It looks like brand new.

I did an oil change at 54000 miles and recently, about 3000 miles after the oil change, started to hear the engine clicking occasionally. This could be caused by cold weather, or from the weight of the oil I used (5W-30). I'm also told the wreck could have knocked a bolt lose in the motor and that maybe responsible for the clicking. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse.

General Comments:

Overall, this has been a great car. It's got very good safety features, and handles great. It's a lot of fun to drive! And for just being a 4-cylinder, I think it has a lot of power, especially when first taking off.

Also, a lot of people have complained about brake problems with these cars. I've only put about 10000 miles on this car since I've had it, but so far the brakes are still in perfect shape. The previous owner of my vehicle also told me that she never had any brake problems (or other mechanical problems) with this car.

There have been minor things that have gone wrong with it, but nothing major (not yet anyway). I have a high opinion of GM cars and have been pretty impressed with my Alero. I recommend them to people who are looking at buying a new car.
