1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme from North America

Summary:

Could be a very dependable nice running car

Faults:

Doesn't matter if at park or driving down the road, when the motor gets to operating temperature, the motor starts to flutter then die. I took it to a shop and they tested the fuel pressure from the fuel rail, and it tested good. They hooked it up to a computer and did not flash any codes, but they told me that the EGR valve was unplugged electronically. They plugged everything in and ran fine. They let it run and it ran perfect.

I pulled out of the parking lot, and two blocks down the road it dies while driving; it just cuts out. So I replaced the the EGR valve, the coil packs and the ICM, and it still has the same issue, it gets up to temp and it flutters and dies. And it won't start up again for at least 1 hour, then it will start until it gets up to temperature, then dies.

General Comments:

It is kinda rare. It's the FE3; that is the performance suspension 1989 Olds Cutlass.

When running it runs really smooth, very quick car, handles like it's on rails.

I had the same issues with the my 1990 Cutlass Ciera S. Mechanics couldn't find anything physically wrong with it, but I just told them to replace the computer and sure enough, it ran just fine from that point on. I just got an 89 Cutlass at an auction and I'm having the same problems again. So I think I'm going to go ahead put a new computer in this one too.

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Classic 5.0L 307 V8 from North America

Summary:

Greatest affordable car General Motors ever made

Faults:

I have owned this car for 16 years and have replaced lots of parts on it, so the list would be extensive, but no more repair cost than what I would have spent on some other cars over the 16 yr period. The one thing that kept going out more than it should was the water pump. That's all. Everything else was replaced just to restore the car.

When I first got the car I had to have a valley pan gasket put on it to keep it from running hot and have the radiator rodded out. I just replaced the radiator last year.

General Comments:

This car has been well worth the money I have in it. I have figured it up and it cost me about 1/3 the money I would have spent on getting a new car every 4 years like most people do.

It drives well and rides good. It starts when I hit the switch and I have only been stranded by a dead battery.

Most dependable car I have ever owned. I love and plan to keep it as long as possible.

MY 1989 Olds cutlass supreme 2 door has 220,000 miles on 2.8 v-6 and still running strong...doesn't look pretty, but at 3.60 a gallon for gas, it gets excellent mileage.

"-I always give this car a complete tuneup every 3,000 miles."

Either you are referring to tuneup in a can gas additive, or that is some expensive maintenance!
