1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 2.4 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Great, reliable car for anyone

Faults:

Needed to replace fuel and brake lines when I first bought the car (44500 miles) because of rust damage.

My catalytic converter blew at about 46000 miles because of rust damage.

A/C is started to go at 50000 miles.

Needs new suspension because of rust (50000 miles).

General Comments:

The 2.4 Liter 4 cylinder is a great engine; everyone asks me if it has a 6 and is dumbfounded when I tell them it is the 4.

Never any issues with the engine.

Very comfortable seats.

Most issues on this particular car have been because of rust.

Some parts tend to be a little costly because not many are still made.

Love the stock color matched wheels.

GM's baby Cadillac that was made for everyone.

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera 3.8L V6 from North America

Summary:

Like driving a powerful couch!

Faults:

Rear brakes and ball joint; both around 90,000 miles.

Cloth ceiling fell down.

Power door locks stick in frigid weather.

General Comments:

I had a great experience with this car. Got mine with 70,000 miles on it, and within a year have driven over 30,000 more. The body hasn't rusted at all.

The interior is very spacious. The seats are really plush. With the car's comfort and speed together, it's like driving a powerful couch. The radio is a bit too far for comfortable reach while driving, though.

The 3.8L V6 engine is really great. It truly does go from 0-60 in no time at all. This was the first car I had that was not a 4 cylinder, and I will never go back.

Just bought a 2004 3.4L V6 Tacoma, so now I'm selling the Olds. Even with 100,000 miles, I should be able to get at least $800 for it.

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass FE3 2.8 from North America

Summary:

Best car I ever bought for four hundred dollars

Faults:

I had to replace the Alternator. Thank you to the parts store for selling re-manufactured parts at half the price. (59.95) The glass was broken in Drivers side door. I replaced it myself and it took about an hour to figure out how it went in, but it was pretty easy. The power sunroof motor blew as I was closing it so now its stuck in an almost closed position.

General Comments:

The seats in this car make you feel like your in your favorite chair at home. Nothing crowds against you as you drive, but the armrest isn't too far away that you have to lean to use it. This car gets up and goes when you need it to, but cruises along just fine when you want a relaxing ride.

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass SL 2.8 MPFI V6 from North America

Summary:

Great bargain for great transportation

Faults:

A couple of things went wrong with this car, but they were entirely attributed to the rust caused by salt, lack of the previous owner's care, and my lack of avoiding pot holes.

The fuel feed line sprung cracked the day I got it registered.

The rear brake line formed a leak last week.

I recently discovered that the coolant fan does not work (Possible fuse/motor problem???)

The rear rotors may need to be replaced/resurfaced soon.

General Comments:

Overall, I am very happy with this car. It is more difficult to work on than my previous vehicle, but that is expected for a car only costing $1000.

Pros:

It has pretty good handling around corners.

Great fuel economy. Between 19-24 city and 30-32 highway.

Highly responsive, but not that fast.

Exterior looks pretty sharp. My previous owner gave it a metallic blue paint job. Looks more like a mid 90's vehicle.

Cons:

Can get pricey to work on.

1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 6 cylinder 2.8 liter from North America

Summary:

Good engine, lousy handling

Faults:

Alternator went bad about a month after I bought it.

Headliner has become unglued.

The instrument panel went bad not long after I bought it.

When I rejuel it, gas comes out of the filler.

All tires that I've had on the front wheels eventually lose air.

There is a drain on the battery so I keep having to recharge the battery often.

General Comments:

I am satisfied in the performance of the engine. However the handling is very poor in my opinion. The interior smells weird and the dash is very cheap and tacky.

Old cars with high miles tend to have bad handling. Replacing upper and lower ball joints will help. Also the tie rod ends and centerlink in the steering is probably worn.
