1996 Peugeot 106 XN 1.1 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An enjoyable small car.

Faults:

Catalytic converter replaced at 30,000 miles. Nothing else.

General Comments:

Very lively and smooth engine for an 1100.

Handles well. Sensitive too bad road surfaces.

Too noisy in the cabin, but probably average for a car this size.

Good looking trim, but the radio/cassette player is cheap.

I get 50 mpg and 500 miles to a tank.

1996 Peugeot 106 XS 1.6i petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, fun and a great handling car

Faults:

The car failed its MOT for an insecure exhaust centre section and the emissions where sky high. This may be due to wear and tear or the improper fitment of an aftermarket back box.

There is only one fault this is no electric windows and there should be for a 1.6 3 door come on!

General Comments:

The car is quite quick I found it a lot quicker when I fitted a full stainless system and a cat replacement pipe now 0-60 in 8 seconds.

It handles like a go- kart with very little body role on the standard quite stiff suspension.

And lastly the seats are fantastic sports hugging stylish monsters only thing is rear headrests required.

1996 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Amazing car, Kills most others

Faults:

Middle pipe of the exhaust where the cat joins on snapped at 36,000.

General Comments:

This car is the best car that I have ever owned, it's so much fun to drive. The only thing that I will say about this car though is that it does not pull as well in 5th gear as all of the other's. I find that you have to take it near to the red line in 4th to get the similar pull in 5th. I have owned the car now for 8 months and have enjoyed driving it, for some reason the car makes you want to go faster. The handling of the car is amazing as long as you can afford to pay for the tyres, this is a problem as the sides tend to wear down a bit quick if you corner hard. I have put my car up against a lot of other GTI's and the 106 comes out on top in most cases. One problem with the car that I found being quite tall 6.2" is that the roof is quite low and you need to have the seat leaned back further than you would normally. The car is a nice car to drive and if the back end does come out it is very easy just to whip back in again and recover the situation. If you are looking at getting one of these cars I would strongly recommend it, Even Jeremy Clarkson rated it his 3rd favorite car just under the 355 ferrari because it was so much fun to drive. Recommended. Check the oil regular as it goes through the oil quicker than normal cars and also get a performance air filter as you will notice quite a lot of difference in the power.

1996 Peugeot 106 XLD 1.5 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable and economic 'big feel' car that slows down up hills

Faults:

Needed a new starter motor.

Brakes sometimes seize in heavy rain.

General Comments:

Excellent reliability and economy (60mpg however I drive it).

Car performs well up to 70mph, but after this 'gives up'. This is particularly pronounced when travelling up even moderate hills on the motorway and can become very frustrating. But what can you expect from a 1.5 diesel engine?

Adding a turbo would make this car a much more realistic model for high mileage users. If Vauxhall managed it on the 1.5 TD Corsa, why didn't Peugeot?

Interior is satisfactory and noise from the engine quickly reduces once you get going.

The drive feels like a much bigger car - well done Peugeot. I now have a 306 and there is not an awful lot of difference in feel of drive and handling.

Brakes are good and servicing is cheap. I found the fuel filter very hard to get to compared to other similar cars though.

1996 Peugeot 106 Quicksilver 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great little car which will give you a good ride

Faults:

Had a problem with the air bag light which kept flashing. This was solved by the dealer.

General Comments:

This is a great little car, it handles great and is very nippy for a small engine. It looks the part too and is easily modified.

1996 Peugeot 106 XL Auto 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The car has been extremely reliable, having done 45,000 miles. However, it has recently developed a noise from the gearbox which sounds like it may be expensive.

General Comments:

Fuel economy is the car's downside. Round town I get as little as 20 mpg which is very poor for a small car. On a run this can be as good as 45mpg if driven carefully.

Newer model has a smaller engine to improve economy.
