1997 Peugeot 106 Look + 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Worthwhile addition to your driveway if you already have a big comfy car

Faults:

Exhaust cracked at mid section pipe. Had to replace the cat because of it. Cost 200 quid to replace even though the original cat itself was fine. Garage told me this was a common fault on 106's.

Nothing else (though I only did 4000 miles in it).

General Comments:

When carrying driver and one passenger -

Quick little car for what it is, and fun to throw around on short journeys. Great handling, can see where the Citroen AX influence came in. Turns in sharp with loads of grip (even on budget tyres). Recommend to anyone looking for a small car for short trips to work and back.

When carrying 3 passengers -

Totally underpowered, extra weight really unbalances the car. The back end feels very sluggish and unresponsive. Absolutely torturous to drive for any distance, uncomfy, unsupportive seats after the first 10 miles.

When used for it's intended purpose (short trips) it's fun, cheap to run, and has all the bare essentials to get you from A to B. In every area with the exception of trim/comfort levels it outclasses all of it's rivals.

This model is one of the most basic. I'd expect the bigger engined and better equipped versions to rate much higher as the basics of a good car are all there.

1997 Peugeot 106 GTi 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A beauty, a little gem, phwoooooaaarrrrrr!!!

Faults:

Nothing, the car has been perfect. I can't fault it.

General Comments:

The motor performs and handles beautifully like a sunset in the south pacific. stick to the road like it has super-glue on every wheel, I have a Clifford alarm and that is a god send for this car because I would steal one if I didn't have one.

1997 Peugeot 106 Rallye 1.6 8v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best pocket rocket supermini you can buy!

Faults:

Very little, the electrics (interior light, boot light) have a life of their own.

Car paintwork also appears to dent and chip easily too.

General Comments:

Other than niggly faults, this car has got to rate as one of the sweetest, most eager cars I've driven. It's quiet when cruising, yet put your foot down, watch those revs and you'll be rewarded with a great little involving car.

It looks smart (particularly in blue) and is a great alternative to a Saxo VTR. Don't pay over the top dealer prices though - Peugeot dealers will overcharge you. Best source from the trader or through the owner clubs.

1997 Peugeot 106 XLD 1.5 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economical tortoise

Faults:

Dubious smell after long runs - possibly brakes?

New pads, discs, oil and fuel filters.

Required new head lamp bulbs (within a week of each other?)

Dealer lost the immobiliser code on day of collection and forgot to put an oil drain plug back in properly, oil slick outside my house (Castles, Leicester).

General Comments:

Pedals extremely close together.

Watch out for smells after long runs (we had a loaner, same model, for the day and thought it was on fire at one point!)

Colour coded bumpers prone to crack at the slightest touch.

1997 Peugeot 106 XN 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Quick, responsive and cheap to run!

Faults:

Wear and tear only.

Front tyres at 50'000, rears at 60'000, exhaust (mid section) at 60'000.

General Comments:

For a cheap car, its very entertaining. Quick enough to shame most 1.4s. Brilliant handling even though there is a lot of body-roll.

Seats are uncomfortable on long journeys.

1997 Peugeot 106 XN 1.1 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Reliable and Nippy

Faults:

Light cluster at the back filled up with water after going through a car wash, and blew two bulbs. This was cured by a trip to the dealer who drilled two drainage holes in the light cluster to prevent it from happening again.

General Comments:

The car has been reliable. I have had it from new, it has sat on my drive in all weathers and in the winter it still starts first time. It's also very smooth and the ride is a lot softer than my Corsa was.

However the seats do lack support and I have found them uncomfortable on long journeys. I also find the pedals very close together. If you wear size 10 shoes or above you may find yourself hitting two pedals at once! My mother and sister both love the car and they do not suffer the problems I do with comfort. The car is very nippy and only sips fuel.

1997 Peugeot 106 XL 1.1 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Although second hand the car had only done 12,000 miles, but was pulling to the left. When I picked it up I found out that it was the brakes binding. They also told me that they had replaced the clutch!

General Comments:

This model is very slow so don't expect to blow people away at the traffic lights.

Saying this the petrol is OK if you drive steady.
